Captains Review

Post by whatisthejava »

I think it's about time a captain gets to request a TMO review.

If Barclay could have we could have had a p try against Reid and would have had been playing against 13 all blacks.

Would have also saved us in the WC so I guess we are just waiting for the AB or England to get done over by a unwilling ref and then the law will change.

Reckon 2 reviews one in each half.

And Hogg might have got either of his disallowed tries vs Wales in the last couple of years. Not that they were important I don't think.

Introducing that might actually be a useful chance to state that anybody other than the captain appealing for the TMO (in a polite way) can fuck right off, or risk a penalty.

That's a bit unfair. Nobody thought that Georgia full back scored that wonder try a couple of weeks ago until he begged the ref to go to TMO.

Then he'd have to convince his captain. Same way in cricket if a bowler thinks he has someone plumb lbw it is still the captain who calls for a review.

I am not sure it would work in rugby to be honest. There are too many variables and the laws are not clear cut in some cases.

I think it just means if a captain feels a decision is wrong and he thinks it is important enough he can call for a TMO review

Nz V France in WC 2007
Scot v Oz WC 2015 (knock on and Hogg getting taken out late)
Scot v Nz - Sat

It would be abused and we'd be stopping the game an additional 2 times mininum per half. At the rugby laws just aren't black and white enough. It works best in sports where the answer is absolute; ball in or out, LBW at cricket etc.

Joubert may very well have kept his original decision the the RWC.

Barnes may have come up with a reason why a pass wasn't for.

A bit of a contrived situation but say Cane wasn't penalised in the incident he was binned for and NZ produce a turnover. JB could ask for a review and the ref look at it and say "no, he couldn't move from that position". Review lost.

Not sure about this, it's one more way that top-flight rugby would be different from everyone else's rugby. Isn't that the job of the TMO now in any case? Didn't see it myself, so can't blame him too much in this instance.
