I guess humor is culture-dependent to an extent. This is my favorite Turkish comedien, though you'd be hard-pressed to find a Turk willing to admit they actually like him

Not sure. I've only seen two. I think Gokbakar is a very clever comedian though. It requires a certain amount of courage and honesty to produce that brand of humor. His films are actually popular here, going by viewing figures, and that's probably because many people do recognize a kernel of truth in the Ivedik caricature. Getting them to admit to it is another matter, however . . . You'd have to live here and speak the language to appreciate that, of course, which was precisely the context in which I posted it.

Nah, just a bit of a light chat about culture-dependent humor. It would be fair to say that while 99% of Turkish men do not remotely resemble Recep Ivedek, there is barely a day goes by in this city of 15 - 20 million that we don't witness this behavior on several occasions or more. The best thing you can do is just laugh about it. That's the art of humorous social commentary and Gokbakar does it best. There are imitators, of course, one or two of whom are sometimes amusing (usually in TV ads) but just can't make a decent full length movie with it.
