Old School Rugby Truths

Post by I R Geech »

After hearing a father earlier sagely telling his son to always play into the wind in the first half so you get the benefit of having the wind when everyone is tired later, started thinking of other nonsense I believed/was taught as a nipper - my top favourites

Covering your legs in Vaseline makes you harder to tackle
Slapping Deep Heat everywhere is a warm up
Always grubber your kick offs when it’s raining to get a knock on
John Fucks Mary is an unbreakable line out code

Haha - ‘always’ is overstating it, but I’ve seen the grubbered kick off in the rain work to great effect many times. If you’ve got quick chasers it’s a great way of putting pressure on and getting the ball back cheaply.

'Run Straight' .... shouted just before their poor child performs a fantastic side-step and flat-foots the opposition defence.

Twats.

or 'stop running across the pitch' before the lightweight whippet, doing the natural thing to avoid pulverisation runs around the entire opposing backline and disappears into the far corner.

"No matter how big he is, if you take his legs, he'll go down." Spoken to a late developing summer born 14 year old. I didn't believe it at the time; that was just 3 years after Catt tried to take Lomu's legs.

After 20 mins of a particularly memorable game (and in the course of playing Flanker,) one of my frontrow colleagues grabbed me by the collar and shouted at me:
'First up tackles aren't made at speed'.

"Tried" is the key word here. The adage still holds true even if Catt could not do it.

Ooh, I dunno. Met Police were the dirtiest team I ever played against. Even worse than London Irish and they are filthy dirty all the way down to their Minis.

Don't mind that friendly middle-aged guy in a track-suit who keeps popping up at shower-time - he's a friend of the coach and seems harmless enough. (doesn't seem to talk much about rugby though...)
