Premiership Predictions Thread 2017-18

I was going to resurrect this with a big post tonight, but Bloggs has beaten me to it and this is the best I can do on my phone.

Pay no attention to my predictions - I think Russians may have edited them to make me look foolish.

And the results are:

Premiership Winner:
Scrumhead, Mellsblue, Which Tyler, Gloskarlos, and Bloggs all picked Sarries for the title. Seems a bit of a cheap prediction tbh - the refuge of a coward to go for the obvious choice. Personally, I think those brave and daring souls who picked Leicester deserve some recognition and not abuse for making the worst choice.

Table order:
A lot of people picked Saracens, Exeter and Wasps in the top 4, with Irish being relegated, but no-one picked Newcastle as the other play-off contender. Raggs and Tigersman get the prize for being closest - they got 3 of the top 4 and successfully picked the top 6, if not in the right order.

European predictions - how will the English teams do?
Hahahahaha! Like the English clubs, everyone here failed to adapt to the European competition and I think it's best a swift veil is drawn over this question with the acknowledgement that we all suck.

Top try scorer:
This was a three-way tie between Wade, Goneva, and Adams. Scrumhead, Mellsblue, Timbo, Stom, Raggs, Bloggs, and Guwuffle all picked Wade. No-one picked anything ridiculously wrong for this, which is a shame. Need more hilarious wrongness next year people!

Top points scorer:
Not a single person picked Fazlet for the golden boot, although I get a rare congratulations for picking the second place in Steenson. I wasn't expecting he'd be ousted from the first team by the end of the year though. Burns was a surprisingly popular terrible choice, although I think Timbo may pick up the boobie prize for their selection of Piers Francis.

Surprise of the season:
Some real belters in here - Manu not to miss a game through injury! Purdy outscores Jonny May! Gloucester grow a backbone! There were some that seem obvious, like Northampton's slide or Manu getting injured just as England get interested, so the winner is Stom for picking Leicester not being injury prone any more after ditching Cockerill.

Biggest disappointment: I again get credit for predicting that neither Earle nor Cokanasiga would kick on, but lose it for predicting that that would see them out of England contention. Couple of other prescient shouts in Manu not returning to form (Scrumhead, 5P, Guwuffle), Quins and Bath being bog average (Timbo), however the best shout is Switchskier's "Leicester to never quite put it together" which was quite brave in the face of lots of "Tigers to win the Prem" predictions.

Player having a breakthrough season:
Some really iffy choices here - Ben White? TBC? VRR? Tomkins?! Scrumhead, Stom, Raggs, and Bloggs win with the choice of Marcus Smith, even if he did (understandably) fall away a bit as the season went on.

Best signing:
Tigersman and Stom blot their copybooks with a pick of Saili. Not really sure who was actually the best signing; the popular choices of Ford and Williams didn't really make a massive impact. Probably Switchskier's the best of a bad lot with Jason Woodward.

The Jerome Schuster Award for least effective signing:
Switchskier gets an honourable mention for picking Piers Francis, against the grain, and Raggs deserves mocking for the worst pick of Faf de Klerk (narrowly beating out mine of Nic White), but the notable prediction goes to Timbo of picking the definite Jerome Schuster of Maxime Mermoz.


The overall winner is... erm, nobody. Everyone who did well in one section failed miserably elsewhere. I think the major thing we can draw from the data is that I definitely did not win and should probably not be allowed to predict things any more.

Yeah, Faf for least effective was definitely the worst. I just thought his madness was going to end up leaving Sale in more trouble than successes, whilst still being high profile enough to actually be worth picking. At least I wasn't one of those shooting fish in a barrel by suggesting that a well known poor signing, and third choice tighthead prop, was going to be ineffective.
