Re: World Rankings

Post by rowan »

Uganda climbed two places to 38th on the back of the victory in Dakar, while the Senegalese drop six places to 51st.
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

Morocco still only 42nd after that banning a few years ago. Expect them to keep climbing. Definitely a top 30 side.

Botswana down to 68th. Really have to wonder how they made it into the Silver Cup in the first place, to be honest...

Curiously no change for any of those teams involved in the blowouts in African Cup competition - Kenya & Namibia despite their huge wins, Tunisia & Senegal despite their huge losses.
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

Re: World Rankings

Post by rowan »

1 NZ has been at 1 since the beginning of the decade.
2 England has started the past 7 years at 8, 4, 4, 5, 5, 4, 6
3 Ireland has started the past 7 years at 6, 3, 7, 6, 6, 5, 4
4 Australia has started the past 7 years : 2, 5 3, 3, 2, 2, 3
5 SAfrica has started the past 7 years at 3, 2, 2, 2, 4, 3, 2
6 Scotland has started the past 7 years : 9, 8, 9, 12, 10, 9, 10
7 Wales has started the past 7 years at : 4, 6, 6, 9, 8, 8, 7
8 Argentina has started the past 7 years: 5, 9, 10, 8, 7, 8, 7
9 France has started the past 7 years at 7, 7, 5, 4, 3, 6, 5
10 Fiji has started the past 7 years at : 11, 12, 11, 13, 16, 10, 10

So there has been overall improvement for England & Ireland despite dipping for a few years, overall declined for Australia & SA, gradual improvment for Scotland, nothing but minor fluctuation for Wales and Argentina, overall decline for France, and decline and recovery for Fiji.

Sorry, this is the correct version  :D

Re: World Rankings

Post by rowan »

Very little change at the top of the rankings since this time last year, in fact. Scotland is the biggest increase with 2 places to 7th, and Wales the biggest decrease with 2 to 7th.

The biggest improvers overall were Lithuania by 9, Brazil, Tunisia and Uganda by 8, Malayasia by 7, Morocco, Malta, Hungary, Tahiti and the Caymans by 6, Chile, Hong Kong and Zambia by 5, China and Thailand by 4, and Uruguay, Netherlands and PNG by 3.

Biggest fallers were St Vincent by 18, Moldova 12, Senegal 10, Zimbabwe and the Cooks, 8, India, 6, Norway and Peru, 5, Serbia, Andorra, Sweden and Mauritius, 4, and Canada, Namibia, Belgium, Korea, Kazakhstan and Uzbekhistan by 3.

 Corrected. St Vincent were the biggest fallers, probably due in part to inactivity, not Slovenia as I originally wrote. Apologies to all Slovenians on board.

Biggest improvers of the past 10 years: Israel by 34, Malaysia 32, Denmark 26, Guyana 23, Colombia 22, Holland, Switzerland, Bosnia 20, Senegal, Lithuania 19, Luxembourg 17, Nigeria 15, Guam 14, Malta 13, Zimbabwe, Botswana 11, Kenya, Venezuela, Latvia 8, Japan, Sri Lanka 7, Hong Kong, Jamaica 6

Joined rankings since 2007: Mexico now 55, Philippines 60, Pakistan 78, Uzbekhistan 92, Mauritius 93, Rwanda 94, Indonesia 98, Greece 99, US Samoa 102

Biggest fallers: UAE by 28, China, Peru 23, Monaco 22, Sweden 21, Solomons 20, Barbados, Niue 18, Moldova, Taipei 17, Croatia 15, Morocco, PNG 13, Kazakhstan 12, Hungary, Norway, Thailand, Bermuda, Vanuatu 11, St Vincent 10, Cameroon, Swaziland, Serbia 9, Korea, Paraguay, Zambia 8, Canada, Finland 7, SA, Cooks 6

NB: Inactivity may have played a part in some of the big fallers, Morocco are returning from a ban and climbing back up the rankings quickly, Cameroon and Nigeria are currently banned (though the latter features among the improvers nonetheless), & UAE was known as Arabian Gulf a decade ago.

First rankings of the new year see Ghana and Costa Rica added at 93rd-equal, bringing the total number of teams to 105. Guatemala must surely be close, along with Algeria, of course.

Aside from France dropping below Fiji into an all-time low of 10th, the big news is Brazil are up to an all-time high of 25th, and are now the second-highest World Cup virgin after (22) Hong Kong. In fact, the difference between (21) Canada and Os Tupis is now only 3 points; the same as between (1) NZ & (2) England https://www.worldrugby.org/rankings/mru

It looks like the only changes this week will be Spain switching with Russia for 19th, Uruguay moving into a tie with USA for 17th (perhaps depending on how rounding works) and the Netherlands just inching below Belgium.

Uruguay v USA, in Montevideo, in the final round of the ARC will be interesting.

Brazil up to 26th. Might we see them at a RWC in the 2020s??

Brazil are one place off matching their all-time best of 25th in the World Rugby Rankings after getting their 6 Naciones Sudamericano campaign off to a winning start with a 28-12 victory against Chile in Sao Paulo.

England certainly on a downward spiral. Weren't they 2nd not long ago? Fiji will be overtaking them before long...

There is no combination of results this weekend that would see England drop any further. At best, Scotland could get to within 0.32 rating points.

Fiji does have a chance to pick up some good points playing Scotland and France in November. If England lost all 4 (v NZ, Au, SA and Japan) then I suppose there could be a mathematical chance of that happening.

If Argentina have a storming TRC, they could perhaps become a threat to England but this doesn’t look likely on current form.

Overall, these rankings look about right. Wales at 3 perhaps looks a bit anomalous but actually Wales, Oz, SA and England (3rd to 6th) are all within 1.6 rankings points of each other (remembering that home advantage is considered to be worth 2 rankings points). That group is isolated 3.5 points behind 2nd placed Ireland and 2.5 ahead of Scotland in 7th.

Actually, having a tinker with a points calculator, it looks as though Fiji could theoretically overtake England in November even if England beat Japan.

Unlikely though.
