One last tournament to upset the Kiwis.

Massive shame easily the best English ref and IMO top 3 ref worldwide. (Despite what the Kiwi's whine about).

I will always remember him for this, one of the worst refereeing decisions I've ever seen

That's the one I always remember when I hear someone moan about TMOs ruining the game. Should've been a red to Manu and a medal for Ashton for an impressive lack of whining, both about being punched and for being yellow carded. Can just imagine the noise if Fazlet had been involved.

Barnes is a top ref. Reffing at the elite level is extremely demanding and he has generally been one of the better ones in recent years.

Tuilagi should have nothing but embarrassment for those powderpuff punches which should have floored Ashton.

One of the best referees I've seen, without doubt he'll be a loss to the game

Top quality ref. His ability to annoy the Kiwis is just the icing on the cake. It’s a shame to be losing such a top talent. Won’t miss those incredibly high cut shorts, though.

I don't imagine you'd happily have traded places with Ashton there. Credit to him for the way he handled it.

It was bad from Barnes but I have very slowly come around to thinking he's a great ref. The matey banter still pisses me off but I guess it's understandable when you're essentially colleagues with all these guys, working with them multiple times a year.

He seems very young to be calling it a day?

Certainly not!
When was this incident? Did they have TMOs then, because surely Barnes would have requested an in depth look at what took place? If he had, then Tuilagi would have copped a lengthy ban.

He's undoubtedly one of the leading refs in world rugby today and having just read this article : https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/int ... -world-cup
even some NZers think the same.

It was the season before TMOs were allowed to be referred to on foul play, so there was no option. 2011, IIRC, cause i remember the ban being fudged so that Manu could turn out for England.

No problem with the ref and touch judge not having had a clear view of something off the ball and making a mistake - this is exactly what the TMO is needed for.

That's my recollection as well - it was used as "case in point" for those like myself who were saying that TMOs really SHOULD be getting involved in foul play.
It's just not fair to expect the ref to have seen whatever sparked it when they're only really going to look be either random chance, or as a result of the first punch.

FTR and IIRC - Wayne really is the cream of the crop when it comes to TMO use - he's the first (that I saw), and most persistent in asking the TMO to have a look at something, whilst having the game play on

Top ref, never quite got the anti-Barnes brigade apart from NZids obvs lol.Always fair minded even when my team got the shitty end of the stick. I actually liked all the explaining to players. He obv knew viewers appreciated why he'd penalised someone and did his best to communicate it to them and the players. Not everyone can be a top level rugby player, we need blokes like WB to do the crappy jobs, and do them well. He loved the limelight obvs but never strayed into Steve Walsh territory.
