Oh, I do hope Whitelocks "sabbatical" will be with Quins. After all, we have that special deal...

Re: All Blacks post-2019
A few players updated above. Racing apparently wouldn’t give Read a 3 year deal so he’s looking at Japan, as apparently are Crotty, Coles and A. Smith.

Re: All Blacks post-2019
Matt Procter is off to Northampton. That’s a real blow. With Crotty and SBW probably off he could well have become a long term starting All Black.

I agree it's a blow. And I certainly think he deserved far, far more test opportunities than he got. But he's a centre who, had he stayed, would've been playing in Goodhue's shadow.

Re: All Blacks post-2019
We are seeing an ongoing production line of promising midfielders though, with Jack Goodhue and Laumape knocking about. There are also good middle-management midfielders available like my boy Buckman (who really should've been an All Black by now, IMO), Matt Faddes and Tim Bateman. There's also the next generation coming through like Vince Aso, Billy Proctor, Bailyn Sullivan and Tumua Manu who are worth a long-term investment.
It sucks that he's leaving, but at the end of the day, he needs to do what's right for him, and if the British dollar is good enough for him, then we can't begrudge his decision.

Jeff Toomaga-Allen off to Wasps to join Brad "The Plastic Englishman" Shields. Looking like that Japan cap has been lucrative for fringe players.

Re: All Blacks post-2019
Perpetually on he fringes, and almost 30, while younger props like Tyrel Lomax and Atu Moli are starting to emerge and earn caps, not to mention the good Alaalatoa brother, who'll probably get capped in the next couple of years. I like Toomaga-Allen, but it's clear that he's starting to get lost in the shuffle and I can't blame him for deciding to get going while the going is still good.

Re: All Blacks post-2019
I'm a big fan of sabbatical seasons, since it's meant that our players get an opportunity to get a proper break, it reduces the team's reliance on specific individuals by challenging the depth available and IMO, Japan is the ideal destination because it means they still get a decent standard of rugby (roughly equivalent to the NPC here) in a short amount of time.

Re: All Blacks post-2019
I read somewhere that in this case it will mean that Retallick will go straight into the Japanese season then back into another NZ one, without a break. Good financially but means that over 2 years he will effectively play three seasons.cashead wrote:I'm a big fan of sabbatical seasons, since it's meant that our players get an opportunity to get a proper break, it reduces the team's reliance on specific individuals by challenging the depth available and IMO, Japan is the ideal destination because it means they still get a decent standard of rugby (roughly equivalent to the NPC here) in a short amount of time.

Re: All Blacks post-2019
True, he would basically be packing three seasons into two. Though, as Cashead says, Japan is shorter and much less physically demanding than NZ or Europe. Other franchise stalwarts/fringe All Blacks have managed it before. Guys like Andy Ellis and Matt Todd (I think), for example. Being a front line player Retallick is obviously different, and I imagine his workload in NZ would be managed to accommodate the playing sabbatical.

He said Japan is shorter....
Ma'a Nonu is in action for the Bloos latest pre-season false dawn I see. Is SBW playing at the moment? What use a Nonu and a SBW in the same team?
