Sadiq Khan

Post by Eugene Wrayburn »

So it has taken Khan about 5 minutes to turn his back on the commitment that he would ensure 80k affordable homes were built every year. I've long thought that the endearing thing about British politics was that politicians may be hopelessly optimistic but they did by and large believe their promises when they made them unlike american politics where the lie was the basic currency of discourse. It looks like the Americanisation of British politics is complete.

The Tory Mayor has failed to invest £400 million of his affordable homes budget. Sadiq will use this and support housing associations in their plans to ensure a minimum of 80,000 new homes a year.

This is simply not what his commitment was.

If you are going to call someone a liar, at least call the right person a liar.

Er, it pretty clearly is what his commitment was. HAs did not have a commitment to ensure that 80k homes were built a year which is the only other possible (if incredibly strained) interpretation of what he said.

ETA, he repeated continually during the election that he was committed to building these homes. Furthermore he could have put forward the defence that you just have in Mayor's questions when asked earlier on, if only he'd thought of it.

I quoted his pledge above. If you can't see the difference then you need to go back to school and learn better comprehension. I rather think that your comprehension skills are more than adequate given your profession, and you are just being disingenous.

Yep it's me, who lives in London and heard him repeatedly pledge more homes, who is being disingenuous.

Must I spell it out for you?

"he would ensure 80k affordable homes were built every year"

vs

"ensure a minimum of 80,000 new homes a year."

Don't see where the affordable 80k homes comes from. I trust you have some proof for a pledge for 80k affordable homes?

You are quite right. I erroneously added "affordable". It's actually entirely irrelevant because he's refused to stand by the pledge he actually made.

Funny, because the story I see in the Tory press first claims he said he'd build 80,000 affordable homes (which you just admitted is wrong), and subsequently says he refused to give an exact number of affordable homes.

I assume the story you are referring to is this one:

Minutes are not yet available, so I cannot verify exactly what Khan did say.

Propaganda?

"Do you stand by your target to build 80,000 homes" "Target, what target. I'm not hung up on figures". I paraphrase.

Of course all of this is a nonsense anyway. The mayor doesn't build homes. Nor is he really the largest component in the conditions which dictate whether homes are in fact built. Yet every candidate promised these homes as though they could will it or command it by mayoral fiat. When i talk about the Americanisation of UK politics flat out deception about what you can possibly hope to achieve falls well within.

He appears to be quite the racist

Yet a week after being chosen as the Labour Party's candidate, Sadiq Khan gave an interview to the Daily Mail where he outlined his plan to support a festival showcasing Tel Aviv. He vowed to oppose the initiative launched to oppose Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian land - the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS).

He also stated that his party leader Jeremy Corbyn's attempts to engage with Palestinian and Lebanese organisations such as Hamas and Hezbollah would turn London into a potential terror target. It rapidly emerged that what he meant when he said that he refused to be drawn into foreign affairs was that he refused to acknowledge the Palestinian narrative in the Middle East.

Indeed. he's a Blairite.
As for the maths. There are mathematic 'theories' on both sides, they are not the same as mathematical facts. I asked for maths.
