Tom Smith - Stage 4 Cancer
Awful awful news.

I remember in 2002 when I played for Fife up in Dundee this quiet wee guy spent an hour talking to every one of our team. Half them didn't even realise the quiet guy was a Lion.

That's so sad. Top banana, fantastic player. Hopefully he gets as much time as possible with his family.Big D wrote:Awful awful news.

One of my favourite players from yesteryear, you couldn't find a better example of quiet understated strength and determination. This is horrible news to wake up to.

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Shocker. All strength to him and his family. Quality player and nice bloke by the sounds of it.

Always felt an affinity for Tom Smith beyond sharing a name.
A true gent and class act and I sincerely hope he can enjoy his time with his family to the full.

That's shit news.
Not that it is in any way important in the circumstances but he's still the last Scot to start a Lions Test match.

Top player for what seemed an age - results speak for themselves.More than held his own against much bigger players.Sounds like he did the usual tough-nut bloke thing and tried to shake something off - hopefully modern treatments can help nail this for him.

Re: Tom Smith - Stage 4 Cancer
I dont want to be too brutal about this, but a snippet from the beeb doesnt sound good:
It's in his colon, and it's spread to his brain and liver. He's having painful, intrusive treatment with the aim of extending his time with his family for as long as possible.
Sounds to me as if its terminal and they're just trying to extend his time.
Horrible news, always one of those players you couldnt help but like. Growing up watching 'living with the lions' on VHS as a kid I kind of felt a little bit of an affinity with him as a prop who wasnt the biggest, yet watching all the social stuff and in the changing room, i dont think you see or hear him talking once.
It's absolutely devastating news for him and his family and I just hope their is some chance of a full recovery for him.

He only had like 4 caps before that Lions tour. Remarkable really that he did what he did on that tour.

Appalling news, and seemingly typical of the man he's turning it around to simply encourage others to ensure they do get checked for any problems.
