BBC World Team of the Decade

Post by Digby »

Just had a go putting in a selection earlier

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/50840365

And what struck me once I'd completed it and the lineup was up is I ended up with a team that had not one player from the northern hemisphere

You could make a decent case for selecting an all nz team. Ah well c'est la vie.

That's a poor selection. They just haven't given any options in many places.

And yes, 10 Kiwis in my team.

Looking back at the last 10 years did the NH have many outstanding players? I'm all for criticising the BBC but facts are facts.

I didn't in this instance mean any criticism, and I had 13 NZ players in my side. A bit conflicted on picking Savea as he's a wife beater, but North is too often just bad, for a number of reasons, and I couldn't pick Ben from accounts twice.

The options on that were very strange in places but j guess you can’t please everyone.

The scrumhalves gave me a giggle. As much as I would’ve taken him to Japan, I’m assuming Care’s in there solely as he’s on the payroll. Ben Youngs......

I picked Jenkins, also Slimani and Creevy in my front row....still had room for 8 NZ players, though.

I guess Smith takes the 15 shirt but I would have expected Halfpenny and Hogg to at least get a token nomination there.

Ditto on Jenkins and Creevy. Lots of kiwis.

I'd pick Jenkins in a British Lions team covering a similar period, but I wouldn't pick him over Woodcock. I did have Creevy though

I like how it gives you three goes at picking Owen Farrell.

The winger options were pretty damn lean.

I like how Danny Care has given us a chance to pick Danny Care

And the teams picked by the public and the podcast team are both just weird

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/50840365

No Conrad Smith or Kaino in either side which is nuts, they overlook Woodcock and Jenkins for the Beast, the podcast boys pick Farrell over Nonu at 12, Barret is in at 15 after one iffy WC and being iffy in one RC from the limited coverage I saw, no chance he's on the same level as Liam Williams or Ben Smith this last decade, just none. Liam Williams wasn't an option, but Ben from accounts bloody well was.

And if there were no Dan Carter he'd be in. But when the running and passing game doesn't work for BB he's not remotely got the kicking game of Carter to keep his team going forward controlling the game, and given Carter wasn't shoddy at the running and passing element it's not a close call, and that before one thinks of defence and goal kicking too

Carter is definitely the complete package. BB started as a fullback at age group international level, but I agree, over the course of a decade, Bin Smuff takes it. Leaving Kaino out is just mental. Davies over Conrad Smith? Bitch pleeze. George North is a very lucky boy. The Farrell selection at 12 is best simply ignored.
