Some sort of rugby videos thread?

Post by Mikey Brown »

If like me you have completely given up on even pretending to work, you may be watching a lot of old highlights etc. with all your free time. Does it make sense to have this here for general entertainment/discussion purposes?

There's quite a few full matches on the England Rugby youtube page. Just watched the first test of the 2016 series away in Aus which was quite entertaining. Just started watching (well, flicking through and laughing at all the various ways Hughes can manage to lose possession) the 2017 home game to Aus.

https://www.youtube.com/c/englandrugby/videos

I wasn't even particularly excited about this recent Lions tour for some reason but this video was good, if still disgustingly over-produced.

Watch that for all the hype and build-up then just rewatch the 2019 semi to see it done properly.

One broader point I would make from having wasted quite a few hours watching England rugby highlights is that Owen Farrell is such an enormous source of entertainment that he is worth a spot in the team on that alone. WI particularly enjoy commentator's tying themselves in knots over his goal-kicking. [Farrell lines up a kick] "And there's no way Farrell is missing this" [Misses] - [Farrell lines up another] "..." [Slots it] "You just knew he was never going to miss that].

Seems like a good plan to me.

Came across this story about Tyrese Johnson-Fisher today and the effect his viral video had on him: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/53447399 Sounds like he was never really into rugby (as he describes, "I was always really an athlete who was playing rugby") and the pressure of the fame threw him out of like with the game. I wonder a little bit whether Barbeary might be susceptible to that as well - as I understand it, rugby is his main sport, but he's been the coming superstar for so long that I wonder at the pressure that he might be under. These video highlight reels might be good for a schoolboy player's contract hopes, but I can't help thinking they're not good for the youngsters themselves.

Not sure it is in the same League. TJF went absolutely viral across the globe. Even the RFU video has over 3 million views. He was big news.

Barbeary is big news in the small section of rugby nerds and message boards. His remember the name series video, fo example, is one of the lowest viewed ever with 29k views. He's also actually played representative rugby, which TJF never did. he was hyped at 15, Barbeary really as he went through U18's, schools first team and then into U20's.
