In fairness to Shields the Saffa tour can’t have been an easy introduction to international rugby. He came in late and got thrown into a team trying to get back on track. And his mediocre early performances could have been for any reason tbh. He’d moved club and country, from memory Wasps were struggling and he picked up a couple of niggly early injuries- fractured cheekbone and knee possibly.

Not sure there’s room for him and Wilson in the England squad, but I wouldn’t rule him out either.

Shields should never have been picked to play in SA. Jones got that completely wrong.

Right now, he's developed into a very effective and consistent club player. Highly unlikely he will play for England again, but he's doing a fine job at Wasps.
