Apparently a war of words has blown up in the swimming with an American talking about doping in the sport. It does seem weird to have so many Russian athletes there which clearly means Russia effectively is getting away with its national doping program.

Trouble is if one person is suspect then everyone has to be suspect, and guys who have, for example, suddenly gone much quicker than their previous best have to be suspect, or who are dominant across multiple disciplines... if that's where you're coming from.

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Yep, you can't have Russia, but you can have the Russian Olympic Committee as some sort of bastardised neutral party

Beeb managed to show the 10k pretty much after it had finished.

Incidentally, did anyone go and help that poor aussie who collapsed in the last 50 metres?

They also showed it entirely live on the RB.

To be fair here, BBC1 has to work around the studio, and often show on delay or a highlights. It was particularly noticeable, as for about 10 minutes they were showing the same race on both channels, one of them live, the other on a delay.

Really don't understand the controversy about the 4x400 relay. The head-on shot at the first hand-over shows 6 2nd leg athletes all ready, the USA lady is half way around the curve and completely out of shot - it was blatant. I don't care how confusing the track markings, if literally every single one of your competitors is stood 5m behind you (despite being in lanes further out, and therefore ahead of you) then you are in the wrong place.

ah ok, fair enough, though does everyone have a red button option? I did say above that they haven't got broadcasting rights so its tricky, but I still think the production is poor.

Everyone with a digital telly.
But yes, the production is terrible. Take the rugby earlier. Started on RB, then shifted to BBC1, but from 10 minutes previously, then back to RB - without a single piece to camera saying "if you want to watch this, switch over"

I think the production, studio direction and in studio presenting have all been weak; accept its difficult doing it remotely, but its almost tabloid.
(I'd think a lot of older folks would also struggle with the red button, but it is what it is).

No, but we might not have had any better options. Poland looked good.

The issue I'd have with the USA straight off, other than find out before you run don't rely on officials, is they essentially had one of the men run 410m and one of the women 390m. In a relay race where everyone is the same sex you'd maybe cut them more leeway, in this where the men are so much faster, nah, nothing doing that's just a DQ all day long

That was the question I was trying to ask.....was that the best we could put out?

Maybe the likes of Baker and Pipi would've added something although I'm not sure Pipi is even in the mixed squad, but she has got individual and women's relay, and you can only go to the well so many times. But we're not talking about making a big difference, almost anything puts us shy of Jamaica, Netherlands and Poland, and really still shy of the USA and probably a couple of others

Thanks- must admit I've lost touch a bit with athletics; from what I understand, we shouldn't be expecting much in the way of medals?

It doesn't look great on the medal front in the athletics, and even someone like KJT is an outside bet being so recently back from injury and she cannot possibly have done the training across the events. But we don't normally pick up a plethora across track and field

4 Sportspeople withdraw from their events for reasons of mental health (I'm sure there are more, but these ones stand out in my mind).
2 of them are met with the utmost support, and are lauded for their stance. 2 of them are heavily criticised, and met with disbelief and accusations of cowardice.
I look at the pictures of the 4, and I just wonder, is there something about these 4 that could possibly account for the different reactions they received?

Quite honestly, I'm happy enough losing to Fiji - they've come on leaps and bounds since Rio; and hopefully the ladies will be able to take it as seriously as the men do, going forwards. Fiji's 3rd ever olympic medal, their first women's medal...

and now...

I'm disappointed at losing to France tho.

I guess Farah has masked the underlying relative weakness- though a few honourable mentions to Ennis and Rutherford :). Relays always a good bet when not dropping the baton or loss of concentration.
Asher Smith doesn’t look right either.

The whole mixed triathlon team was excellent, great sets from each athlete in the swim, cycle and run, and they were so accurate in transition too, and the tactics were excellent.

Fair play to the French lad who worked so hard on the swim and cycle to overhaul Yee, but then sadly for him only drafted Yee around until nearing the last transition

Asher-Smith off the pace in the sprint - out the final. Doesn't look 100%.
Artingstall giving it a go in the boxing semi.
u/d: 3:2 split decision to home fighter ..bronze it is.
Tough one

Meh. Biles has had huge support in addition to the criticism, and for sure there was criticism of Marler. Trying to paint it as all one way dependent on the colour of skin is daft, on a par with Kolisi saying he wasn't listened to because he was black whilst not conceding for a moment Itoje got away with a few close calls from the same ref who Kolisi has essentially just called a racist

Biles has not only had support for her coming into the games with essentially an injury she's also had plaudits for still rocking up full Jon Terry supporting her team, yes there is criticism from some loons, but again some loons will have taken a swipe at Marler and now likely Stokes

Dina just didn't look to have any power. Start was good, she was controlled, but just slow (for her). Doesn't bode well for the 200m either if the power just isn't there, and it didn't look like she made a mistake in transition

I assumed it was a male female thing rathe than skin colour, I suppose it could be either or both, if there is indeed a difference. (That's not me doubting there is, I just wouldn't know as I don't keep up with social media much these days.)
