Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, suggested at a congressional hearing that climate change could be combatted by altering the orbit of the moon and asked a U.S. Forest Service official whether there was any way the agency could do it.

Eberlien responded, smiling, "I would have to follow up with you on that one, Mr. Gohmert."
Has Bruce Willis got a ragtag bunch of misfits together to take on the mission which has a 10 billion to one chance to succeed?

He's gonna need a drunk, a womaniser, a gambler, a smart, pretty but ignored female scientist, a large fella who is slightly dim but good in a fight and loves his mom, a token BAME and a hero...hang on the hero is gonna be Willis...

...unless there's last minute plot twist where Willis sacrifices himself and then the womaniser finally comes good to make sure the mission is a success thanks to the last minute calculations of the female scientist. He brings the team home in one piece and then spends the next few months sleeping with hundreds of women supplied by the U.S. Forest Service (female scientist gets to go first).

Then it turns out the gambler put a sneaky bet on the team succeeding and wins enough money to cancel the entire U.S. debt.

Then after the credits finish rolling, the screen fades to reveal Willis...amazingly still alive but in a bit of a pickle as he is spinning aimlessly in space with just a 24 hour food ration kit to keep him going, plus a screwdriver and some tin foil.

This is how movies franchises are born!

Coming to a movie theatre near you this fall, Fool's Moon. Oh yeah, Willis' character's surname is Fool. Sounds like Full. Sometimes these gags write themselves.

Followed by Fool's Moon 2 - Rescue Mission (working title).

And they say the movie business is running out of ideas! :D

Which is fine, but one should concede that's offensive to a lot of people, and we're accepting it's perfectly fine and those get merely get to be offended.

False equivalence and a particular pet peeve of mine. Rabid right wing people say, "Oh, people get so offended by everything nowadays," conflating "offensive language" and "taking offence" to refer to abuse or general bigoted abuse to minorities and imply that it's on the same footing as a minor social faux pas at a formal occasion. They use "offence" to mean pearl clutching and hurt feelings from someone being a little bit discourteous, when in fact it's participating in and perpetuating structural systems which cause actual damage to a downtrodden group.

And the fun of that is that they then get to say, "That's offensive" when a joke is made at their expense and claim that either a) joining in the systematic oppression of a minority and a jibe making fun of an ostentatious tweeter who claims to know the will of God are equivalent, or b) the people protesting the systematic oppression of a minority are being precious and overreacting.

See also: Punching up vs punching down, and the "I wish to identify as an attack helicopter" bullshit.

Culper Precision said in a statement that it had chosen to release the Block19 in an attempt to show that guns were "for everyone" and that "owning and shooting firearms responsibly is a really enjoyable activity".

"We wanted to show that guns are 'for everyone', so that's why we made one that looks like a child's toy!" Are you fucking shitting me.

ETA. I clicked on the link for the statement to see whether it was taken unfairly out of context. It's not - too many paragraphs of saying that there should be no regulation or restriction of guns but everyone needs to be responsible about keeping all guns out of the hands of juveniles and it's not their responsibility if they make a gun that happens to look exactly like a toy, it's the responsibility of the gun owners. They were just trying to bring some fun and whimsy to guns and it's really upsetting to them that people (liberals) keep trying to act like they're being outrageous and spreading their marketing material virally over the internet. Next week, a gun that's designed to look like a baby rattle, to celebrate the second amendment and the glorious freedoms that it allows, please don't share it and our brand everywhere as that's not our strategy for marketing to MAGA douches who think you're trying to cancel guns.

A new low. You'd like to think that even gun-owners would (mostly) see this as dangerous. It might even backfire (to use an inappropriate metaphor).

Summarise Conservative America in a headline:

"Oklahoma's ERs are so backed up with people overdosing on ivermectin that gunshot victims are having to wait to be treated."

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I whine a lot about this country, my adopted home from home, but the community love prompted by that day 21 years ago was humbling. Big aroha to the brothers and sisters that were lost that day. I love you NY.

The police will of course love that. Now they run the risk of being shot by something that looks like a kids toy. And of course when they come across someone acting like a prat with a water pistol the outcome is likely to be bad.

The gun ownership debate is too far gone even for ridicule.

I don't think the Yank police were ever too concerned about open firing on anyone holding anything in their hands (especially if they're daring to be black at the same time), regardless of if it might not look like a gun.

Men shot by Kyle Rittenhouse cannot be called ‘victims’ in court, judge rules
But defense attorneys may call them ‘arsonists’ or ‘looters’ judge says ahead of contentious trial over fatal shooting of two men

The people shot by Kyle Rittenhouse in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last August cannot be referred to as “victims” by prosecutors in court, a judge ruled on Monday.

Defense attorneys may, however, call them “arsonists” or “looters”, the judge said
