Interesting read, another data source changing common sense training principles - surprised if the uptake is only Quins and Glos, looks like there could be a wealth of information gathered here for all kinds of player decision making.

That is interesting.
I imagine this is a replacement for the trackers that used to be fitted into players shirts.

Yes - but perhaps offers also a different perspective on head impacts etc. being closer to the source. Whiplash movements and that kind of contact I would imagine to be more accurately reported through the gumshield than at the top of the spine.

I'd imagine they are being used as well as. The trackers in the shirts were part of a bib that would track heart rate and mileage covered. The gumshield is supposed to measure force of collisions and the effect on the head area. So you aren't waiting for concussion to stand someone down you can factor in rest periods if you know there's a player who's been involved in big collisions whether training or match day.fivepointer wrote:That is interesting.

All about training smarter instead of harder and ensuring the players are in peak condition and kept healthy.

As someone with a medical engineering background and a son playing U11 rugby, I'm fascinated by this work. It seems a really good piece of technology and something that could hopefully be available across the game fairly quickly. Looks like a classic case that a lot of data gathering is needed to correlate between impact events and short-term symptoms, but there's still a chasm to jump between impact events and long-term health issues which is I guess the holy grail in this area.

There was some interesting stuff about this in the Squidge video about Quins recently if anyone is interested.
