SA’s depth at 12 is outrageous.
Finding a english granny out of of Van Rensburg wouldn’t be the worst thing…

Re: Harlequins vs Irish - Sat 3pm
What are the laws on this? Is it solely outcome based or are there mitigating factors, as there are in high tackles. I’m clearly in a minority of one but, for me, Matthews has every chance of catching the ball, and always has his eyes on the ball, until the last millisecond when he’s already in the air and unable to change anything. This seemed to me to be unavoidable, akin to a ball carrier dipping at the last moment giving mitigation to the tackler. I’d put this down to an unavoidable rugby/contact sport incident but I do appreciate I’ve been in the minority in these instances since it first became a hot topic.
All that said, it could be worse. Yellow card only for this!

Thought exactly the same. Unfortunately here we have ignored the value of such a player at 12.
On the other hand, the tache and mullet should not be rewarded

Honestly, the only real difference between the van Rensburg incident and Loader’s challenge on David for the build up to one of the Irish tries was a more unfortunate landing. If one is play on, so is the other.
As it happens, I think both should have been penalties, but as both indirectly led to tries, I think one balanced the other out.

Disagree - Loader had hands on the ball alongside the Quins player and came away with it. Matthews never touched the ball, only contact with the player. That's the difference to me.Scrumhead wrote: ↑Sat Oct 29, 2022 10:01 pm Honestly, the only real difference between the van Rensburg incident and Loader’s challenge on David for the build up to one of the Irish tries was a more unfortunate landing. It's moot anyway - Irish were robbed mostly because of the last scrum. Quins failed to successfully hook the ball, which is a free-kick. Don't blame the ref as he was on the wrong side, but the touch judge needs to do his job or buy a ticket like the rest of the spectators. Free-kick to Irish, end of the game - instead it's a Quins penalty, after the hooker gives up reaching for the ball and joins the drive, which then gives the lineout and try. I'd be utterly fuming as an Irish fan - the BvR one was a marginal judgement call, but that was clear as day and right in front of an official.

I agree with you on the last scrum. However, I also felt that Irish were lucky Simmonds only got a yellow for the tackle on David and were incredibly lucky not to pick up another yellow when they gave up 5 penalties in the red zone in the build up to Dombrandt’s try. Both of those scenarios would have changed the game and very probably led to the same end result.
I don’t feel overly guilty after we were similarly robbed at the death vs. Exeter. Generally, I feel like these decisions mostly balance themselves out over the course of a season.
Ultimately, we got out of jail after a really flat performance which is more than we deserved. Frustrating that we’re playing much better away from home so far this season.

Just watched the highlights so now seen the Loader vs David challenge. Agreed that both were pretty much the same other than a few degrees on landing. I’d have both reffed as they were but wouldn’t complain too much if they’re both yellow. Ultimately, the ref was consistent which is what we always ask for.Scrumhead wrote: ↑Sat Oct 29, 2022 10:01 pm Honestly, the only real difference between the van Rensburg incident and Loader’s challenge on David for the build up to one of the Irish tries was a more unfortunate landing. Kidney’s post match interview on the matter was absolutely class.
In defence of my stance that they were both fair contests, Flats agrees with me and the two show pony ex-wingers, Monye and Ojo, can therefore be ignored.
