I love it. It's like full contact kayaking. The women's semi final was incredible - the Swiss looked to have second place sewn up until they turned for the gate and suddenly the French launched out of a rapid and bodily slammed them into the bank before pinning them there while they went aroudn the gate themselves.

Ridiculous sport and absolutely wonderful.

Need more events like this. Gymnastics cross. 100m Cross. Just make it all like this.

FFS as I type it's another silver and bronze. Great achievements both, but can't help but feel more gold chances have been missed.
It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I love the idea of 100m cross. Have them slaloming through gates, jumping hurdles, but also being allowed to shoulder-barge each other out of the way.

It really did feel Clarke was targetted by the other boats to jam him up and stop him getting away at that start. Perils of being that good - they worked on pinning him in early doors and it left him playing catch-up the rest of the race.

Looks like it is now the turn of the bike riders to get me thoroughly overexcited before celebrating silver.

UK women get a freaking world record in the team sprint! Have it!!! It's only qualifying but still

Yeah he was definitely targeted but like you say, that's just the way it goes. Bastards.

Brilliant.

How.many world records today? 3 from 3 rides by GB, but several other breaks.
Surely, that's not those new undershirts they're all wearing (on which, GB's seems to be wavey lines, everyone else's seems to be straight)

That's the power of 'Marginal Gains' in action !
(Sure Emma was singing 'Queen'..when the anthem was playing, but that'll do, she may have a few more chances yet to belt it out :) )

Thanks fuck Keely H has won gold. The amount of hype around her was ridiculous.

Question for the board.

What are everyone's thoughts about GB telling Ireland where to go, and claiming the North solely for ourselves? - just for a few days, to add their medal count to ours?
I know it would be a shit-show of epic proportions, but it WOULD put us ahead of the Criminals (and the Froggies), and put us on the podium as a nation.

We can (presumably) let them have it back once the velodrome's finished.

The GB & Irish Olympic peeps would have known this would happen - Wiffen born Eng, brought up NI but has dual passport so
sorted..
There's an element of 'i'll get more chance to travel/compete/experience ..' , then exposure, sponsorships etc, so Olympics moves towards Rugby, Soccer et al. with success hungry nations sniffing out talent, and opportunity hungry athletes
weighing up options.
The Balding-one got pasted online for disrespecting Wiff's nationality, but notice the Beeb are referring more to 'GB & NI' in the commentaries, it seems.
Yup, those extra successes would have placed GB/Ni in a right rosy position !
The 3-way run in twixt Fra/Aus/GB is an interesting sub-plot.

As a Brit with both uk and ire passports, I’m happy to add them all together and vicariously claim personal successs based on other peoples hard work.

More objectively, it would cement the uk’s place as the country to hate, esp from Ireland, which would be funny from our pov but also not really needed at this moment in time.

Galfon is right, there’s def been a focus from the commentators to say gn & ni and not just gb.

Tbh, in any olympics, my main goal is just to see us finish ahead of aus. Don’t really care about anyone else.

Anyone see the surfing this morning? Seems slightly unfair in that it really depends on what wave you get. Not sure about it as an Olympic sport, but man, those views of Tahiti…. oh my ❤️

I'm enjoying the sartorial choices of the different skateboarders.

Another highlight was, the misapprehension that Tim Herman is German. Sadly he is Belgian.

Some of the tricks that Skye Brown is pulling out are ridiculous even before you consider that her shoulder's tightly strapped to keep it from popping out of the socket.

Did I see that one of them is 11?
A] I thought the olympics had a minimum age requirement since somewhen around Syndey - or am I confusing it with Gymnastics specifically (or some other sport)
B] I hope they keep the skateboarders well away from the beach volleyballers - one of them specifically (still struggle to believe that he wasn't banned for all time)

Or, we could slide in with both feet and claim the medals from the British Empire. First on the medal table by a long way. Colonialism works!

Yeah I hope she's okay for the final after falling on her shoulder again just then. It's crazy how young some of them are and willing to throw themselves around like that.

I don't want to derail anything with talk about that particular volleyballer but I understood he's under pretty close watch, if even for his own safety.

One of them was 11 in Tokyo and got silver. Amazing.

Is the skateboarding the same as BMX in that the judges make it up as they go along?

I can't get on board with that. The moves are all known, and I can't see why the scores per move can be known.

Bah humbug, get off my lawn, has anyone seen my glasses.
