It’s so much more complicated though, style, execution and variation in addition to the number and difficulty of tricks make it basically completely subjective.

Have there been any outlandish calls so far?

Scrap all that. Didn’t realise the finals had started. Will be watching on a delay.

All of which can be applied to gymnastics - though I do appreciate that BMX and skateboarding also want to reward improvisation, so can't do ore-arranged routines. But if a move has a name, then it's difficulties known, and it's score should be known - with an allowance for execution and improv.

And yes, I'm still.old

Our girls got bronze, good on her.

British Empire getting gold too
It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Team GB exactly where they want to be in the Women’s team pursuit.

I don't know why, but it's exactly what they wanted - basing that on the instructions the coach was giving the riders, rather than what the commentators were saying. He never showed them a red board, and I only saw number between -0.2 and ±0.

Of course, there's a good chance that that's sticking with the plan despite having been punched in the face by NZ.
But equally may be that they know exactly how fast they can go, when required to go again; and that trying to beat that time would hamstring them later.

Championship running is fantastic, love the Olympics but there's definitely a hierarchy of sports imo, and track and field is #1

What are everyone's thoughts about GB telling Ireland where to go, and claiming the North solely for ourselves? - just for a few days, to add their medal count to ours?
I know it would be a shit-show of epic proportions, but it WOULD put us ahead of the Criminals (and the Froggies), and put us on the podium as a nation.

We can (presumably) let them have it back once the velodrome's finished.
F right off, we're up to 12th on ourselves now, though we only have adeleke left as a true contender (love Sarah lavin, I'd swap all the other medals to see her get 1)

Agreed,
apart from the extreme quality of each competition, the fact that the 21 Golds won so far have been shared by 16 nations,
including the likes of Bahrain, St Lucia, Dominica, Ecuador, Uganda - shows the global and nature of these events.
(Compare/contrast the Pool & Velodrome where a small number of elite nations continually boss the joint and spoils.
Not sure if talented swimmists or cyclists bagging 4 or more Golds at each meet hangs right in comparison with the rigours of T&F, albeit a great watch and boost to the medal table.)

I'm okay with an individual collecting 3-4 medals in one games, as that sort of number cuts across multiple sports.
Sprinters can be eligible for 4 (100m, 200m, 4x100, 4x100 mixed) - whilst needing good team-mates, running is about the most universal of all sports, and there are plenty of non-sprinters with good sprint speeds (bring in a 400m runner, or a long jumper, for example, or hell, a rugby winner, or in one memorable case, a shot-putter)
Distance runners can be eligible for 3 (1500, 3000, Steeplechase)
Gymnasts can be eligible for 7 (5 apparatus, team medley, individual medley) - but they need good team-mates, in a far less universal sport (I'd happily ditch the team medley. The different apparatus seem more different than different swimming strokes or the same stroke over 50, 100 or 200m)
Swimmers can be eligible for 8 (theoretically more) - which is too many IMO (again, I'd ditch some of the team events, and probably cut the number of distances). TBH, I'd happily cut butterfly completely, it's not a stoke that I've ever seen used outside of competition, it's just antiquated.
Horse abusers can be eligible for 5(?) (eventing, dressage, jumping and team for the latter 2) - I'd happily enough not have any of them (though at least the cross-country element of eventing looks kinda cool)

Agree with this, particularly about swimming distances and strokes.

Currently watching handball for the first time. Can't say as I really know what's going on but it's more of a sport than walking.

Despite not having a clue, it was a very exciting finish, Spain beat Egypt in the dying seconds

On the rare occasions I do my workout at the pool I usually try to do a length or so of butterfly. The feeling of flow when one is able to do it is pretty great. It's better than the other strokes in one way, the way it feels like it fuels itself. It's a pity I struggle to swim it for 25m these days. Dunno if this is a common feeling.

Not sure I'm a fan of the subjective judging events, even though some are great. When we are talking 100ths of points difference, it must wrankle a bit. But no idea what you do, as can't dump gymnastics (say).

I know exactly what you mean about how it feels like it fuels itself. The problem is that I've got such poor technique in it that I have to have a nearly empty pool otherwise the water disturbance is incredibly rude to other swimmers.

Rarely managed 25m of butterfly, found it incredibly difficult. The 4 x 100 IM is intense sport

Bizarrely couldn't do butterfly at all when I was younger and stronger and fitter than I am now. Last time I went swimming I managed 25m quite easily and totally get the feeling of flow.

Anyway, cyclings on now and Emma Finucane has just annihilated the field in her Kieran heat. Phenomenal.

Dutch men’s team phenomenal in sprints tho. Great cycling from the Aussies too. But our team going great guns

Although, it has to be said, cycling is a sport where there are just too many permutations of going around a track quickly. We should lose the events that the Dutch are good at.

Quite liked the Butterfly when younger, went well with my frame but couldn't master the breathing so only worked well for short bursts; (actually won a district champ. relay at freestlyle (11 yo)
and bizarrely a 'Digby Jones' cup same year from the pool, but focussed on dry sports thereafter. :| )
First argy-bargie on the track, had to be GB (Eng) - Fra !, most disrespectful to the hosts, but Mills was taken out..
