With one second on the clock there really isn't. the aim of the contest is to hit and to avoid getting hit. All he had to do was avoid getting hit for 1 second, even if it meant a warning. Even Jade Jones who was about 6 points up just turned and celebrated at 2 seconds left.

Both today's Taekwondoers successfully through to their SFs - Taekwondo does have bronze play-offs though, so no guarantees yet.

Jamie Cooke has made a little ground up with the steal-a-horse element of the Pentathalon, but he could really do with one of the leaders having a frank bad round. Ireland's Arthur Lanigan-O'Keefe (you'd never know he was Irish) did even better, and leapfrogged Cooke - didn't know leapfrog was an olympic sport though.
Chung goes well, with just a 7 point penalty. And the Russian has a poor round, losing up to 20 points on the chasing pack; still leading by 10 points at the 3/4 mark though (yes, three-quarters; the Pentathalon has 4 rounds... go figure).

It's supposed to simiulate an officer escaping from wartime captivity (which I still think is really cool) - swimming can stay (open water), fencing should be taken out and replaced with some form of hand-to-hand combat (MMA?); stealing a horse can stay (should be cross-country, not show jumping - better yet, hotwire a motorbike and go motocross); and running away whilst taking pot-shots can stay; but introduce drone dogfighting!

I have to say, after all the pessimism and scepticism beforehand, and despite the poor crowds; these Olympics have really grabbed me. Britain's most successfully games since 1908 (hardly a fair comparison), GB becoming the first nation ever to increase their medal haul immediately after hosting, most diverse medal table in history (both for GB and as a whole), successful introduction of rugby, and barely a hint of the U! S! A! obnoxious chanting.

Doesn't seem to have been so successful / popular overseas though, so that British success obviously goes a long way.

The 7s, Usain Bolt and the football final is about all that interested me. Glad to see Brazil win gold in the latter. Doesn't exactly make up for their epic failure at the 2014 World Cup, and I doubt we'll ever see the 'Beautiful Game' again, now that most of the nation's star players are based in Europe, but at least it provided a little cheer for supporters of the beleaguered Brazilian national team (albeit at U23 level)...

Agreed.The success across many events shows good preparation,coaching and support for the athletes, especially the 'elite' group.
Speaking of which, will Daley now lose his funding as not being podium material for 2020 or potential for 2024 ? ( 'Olympic Podium Programme'...it really does exist ).

Far too much like hard work for me to find out so I will stick with wild speculation. How many medals did gb win in events where a Russian would have been strong competition? Or more to the point, how many more might they have won in London had the cheating ruskies nit been there. China's medal table has notable exceptions in athletics and swimming this games. Anyone surprised?

Not remotely surprised. There was a guy on the radio talking about the amount of testing that gets done and how these are the cleanest games ever from the point of view that everyone knows that they're likely to get caught if they cheat. The interviewer posed a question along the lines of is that why some "traditional powers" like russia and china aren't doing as well this year. The guy stayed quiet but you could hear him smirking.

That has been worse than i expected. Hilights included the 7s and Hockey finals with empty seats. Although this was topped for me when Bolt was given his 200m gold in front of a stadium that was a third full. This was also the day that there were relay heats which is always quite exciting,well for me anyway. If the British did not travel so well to follow sports the Hockey and Velodrome would have been very quiet.

Not just in terms of numbers but booing those competing against your home favourites is not in the Olympic spirit. However I did like booing drug cheats. There should be more of that at every games.

I'm now really worried about Paralympics. Only 15% of tickets are sold. Teams aren't going to be able to travel to get there because of ticket sales and they've cannibalised funding for the Paralympics to get the Olympics going.

Good effort from the gb athletes. Obvs I support the kiwis first and foremost but I have enjoyed watching a sport other than bloody football here in the uk.
