Mens Madison has been even more crackers than usual. UK are out of it, but I do no know how Holland aren't going to be penalised for that crash, it looked like he headbutted the UK rider!
It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Gutsy run by Bell, a Bronze well won in 1500 m.
Muir gave herself too much to do but stuck in there for 5th.
( behind Fra in G & S count again..still a few finals lined up tho'.. )

2 more Bonzo-Bronzo efforts in the 400m relays - Nat. records in both and medal tally up to 61, with 10 in T&F.
Nice work.

Cuuningham out-kicked on the night, and plenty of twins in artistic swimming duets.(real light-bulb moment that must have been for
'sync. swimming' , as was.)
China appears to have mopped up in the non-racing water events.

Kate French defending her Modern Pentathlon title has had to withdraw, which is a shame - ‘sickness’. I do wonder if there is some covid in the camp which wouldn’t have helped.

I'm not too bothered about losing out to the French.
A] I'm a Francophile
B] They're the hosts, and it's always good for games when the hosts do well (unless they'd already expect to dominate - USA / China)

Any other Olympics, and I'd agree about wanting to beat France.

It's losing out to the Aussies that hurts!

Shouldn't feel too bronzed off with 65 medals all in - 3rd highest here and 1 more than last time, but darn those midges and their d!cks !..
( G, S, B by sport:
Track cycling 1, 3, 4
Athletics 1, 4, 5
Swimming 1 ,4, 0

Rowing 3, 2, 3. )

The lottery funding model is pretty brutal, so some teams and individuals may be making new plans for the next 4 years.. :|

Think the men's cyclists, female swimmers will be most under microscope. Good medal haul- do we spread ourselves too thin ....but what is the overall purpose, I guess...

65 medals is quite an achievement, yet.....

14 golds is quite a disappointing return.

This is a very good overview from the BBC - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/ar ... ygvj8gj1yo

yep, clearly highlights the work ons and where good prospects just didnt perform to their best (canoeing, taekwando, boxing (tho terrible judging. Modern Pentathlon as examples). The cycling team gold medal potl was a bit overhyped- esp looking at the dutch men sprinters...BUT there was a real execution problem after the first day...not sure we have the best coaches any more, and that may also be true in swimming.

That said...this is good I guess .....Of the 327-strong British team, 127 athletes will return with a medal of some description; the highest ever. Team GB also won medals in more sports (18) than ever before and, for the first time, secured at least one medal every day.

Across many events the commentators mentioned the increase in the number of nations challenging for medals. It used to be (in my day...) if you wanted a (e.g.) swimming medal you had to get past Aus and US and you were pretty much there. These days, you have to swim past those two plus China, South Africa, plus all the other euro countries, plus the swimmers from wherever that are living and training at college in the US. I guess we just need to re-evaluate medal chances.

(I know I've over simplified where great swimmers come/came from, don't start, it's an analogy)
It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Now add St Lucia or Dominica to the table.

St Lucia:
1 gold
0.18M population

556 golds per 100M of population

Dominica:
1 gold
0.0727M population

1,376 golds per 100M of population

They have to be treated as outliers - if China were as prolific as Dominica they would need to bag 19433 golds, which won't be possible just yet.

As an aside, thought the retro Gavroche/Peakie volunteer caps had a certain.. je ne sais quoi, and deserve another run-out.
