Re: The Cringe/Hate Thread
Council bureaucracy.
We have come back from holiday to find a letter from the council telling us the parking permit process is changing. Fine, I mean, you already give us a parking permit, so that shouldn't be an issue, right? WRONG MUTHERFUCKER.
I now have to, every year, use my council tax bill, THAT I GET FROM THE COUNCIL, to prove my address TO THE COUNCIL, plus prove that the car THAT THE COUNCIL HAS PREVIOUSLY GIVEN ME A PERMIT FOR is mine and is parked at my house, in order to apply for a permit to park said car at said address.

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

W O W. That is an excellent use of resources. Can't imagine that process of the council taking in money makes a profit!Donny osmond wrote: βSat Jul 13, 2024 11:40 am Council bureaucracy.

There will be multiple similar stories at every council across the country. There certainly was in the council I worked in and the one my wife worked in.

What if, bear with me, you just don't care that they're back together, are not remotely interested in spending hours in an internet queue to spend hours in another internet queue to spend hundreds and hundreds of pounds on literally 2 tickets to a gig where you'll be surrounded by thousands of drunk coked up arseholes desperately trying to relive their glory days from 30 years ago that were actually amusingly tragic days at the time and haven't got any better since?

It could be F.A.B. - for business that is.
The numbers generated from the Swift concerts especially in London were mind-blowing.

On both the app and the website, it says my permit is authorised and valid until July 2025. BUT I haven't paid for a session. I don't actually need to pay, the sessions are free, but I still need to 'pay' for a session for my permit to be accepted by the Blue Meanies (that's Weedgie slang for traffic wardens).
So I try and pay for a free session and the only option available is a 12 month session, so I click on it and a month has passed since my permit was authorised so there are only 11 months left and that doesn't compute with a 12 month free paid for session, so I now have to apply for a new permit.

That did make me chuckle but I've had the last laugh.... got an email to say my application had been declined as being a duplicate, so went back into the parking app to try again and I now have a valid parking session that lasts for a year from today... a full month after my valid parking permit expires.J Dory wrote: βWed Sep 04, 2024 7:55 pmTry not to fuck it up this time.Donny osmond wrote: βSat Aug 31, 2024 6:44 pmUpdate.Donny osmond wrote: βSat Jul 13, 2024 11:40 am Council bureaucracy.

Re: The Cringe/Hate Thread
I can accept that children will keep saying 'rizz' and 'skibidi' and there's nothing I can do about it, but seeing/hearing other fully grown adults saying stuff like "bro is low-key cooking" honestly makes me want to give up on the human race entirely. Or at the very least reconsider my stance on capital punishment.
I'm know I shouldn't care about this at all. I know it's such a cliche to be a mid-30s adult who now disapproves of the way young people speak.
In reality I just need to get away from the internet, but my job makes that kind of hard. How is it even possible to take the most bog standard word like "cook" and turn it in to something so obnoxious and cringe worthy? This is one of those where I'm sort of hoping you all read this in complete bemusement and haven't encountered this.

Bestie, I have to say this is mid af. I don't mean to clapback at you, but the English language is highkey a living creature and every generation gives it their own glow up. You might not think it slaps, but it's the L that we've all got to take as we get older and stop vibing with the new folk coming through. I can't say I think it's gucci myself, having just turned 40, but I'm always in my linguistics-era, so I stan new words and new turns of phrase.Mikey Brown wrote: βTue Oct 01, 2024 3:33 pm I can accept that children will keep saying 'rizz' and 'skibidi' and there's nothing I can do about it, but seeing/hearing other fully grown adults saying stuff like "bro is low-key cooking" honestly makes me want to give up on the human race entirely. Re: The Cringe/Hate Thread
Guests who over-stay their welcome.
We've Ali's cousin over from France. Which means 5 adults and a child sharing a 2 bedroom house.
None of the guests lifting a finger to help.
Not a single offer to help cook*, or wash up, though for the 2nd week, they did start using the kettle without asking Ali or I to make them a drink.
TV is basically never switched off; but I'm not sure anyone knew what it was showing at any moment in time.
I'm insomniac, and always wake up around 3.00-3.30 in the morning. I cope by getting up and doing stuff for an hour, then going back to bed, and I can usually get another hour or 2 of sleep. I can't do that with guests sleeping in the living room. Usually, I've gone to work in the morning before being able to use the living room for anything at all.
They've left the house twice - once to go shopping in Cheltenham, and once to go to the supermarket to get food they thought we should have had already (kids food, + some we did have, we just expected an entire round of brie to last more than 1 day. Apparently, brie is a thing they just eat whilst deciding if they want to eat anything between meals or not).
This is the 3rd time this year they've been to stay for a fortnight, with different combinations of 4 guests (this being the first with a child).
They arrived 2 weeks ago, and leave at some point this weekend - though there's chat that 1 will return home, and we'll have to take the other 3 to the airport NEXT weekend. We don't own a car, so will have to rent.
* exception being the 2 year old's meals - we weren't expected to do those - just tidy away and wash up afterwards.
ETA: Sorry, apparently, I really needed to offload onto someone!

Jesus fuck. Can't blame you for needing to vent there, that sounds appalling. I couldn't countenance behaving like that while a guest - hells, I'd feel apologetic about staying in someone's living room for two weeks, let alone being a dick about it. And expecting you to hire a car to take them to the airport is ridiculous.Which Tyler wrote: βFri Nov 01, 2024 12:03 pm Guests who over-stay their welcome.

Survive this visit and have a word with Ali - if their relatives can't behave better, then they shouldn't get a future invite. You've got this.

TFFT.
They're going in the morning!
Ali is as unhappy as I am about how long they've stayed, how disruptive they've been and how glittle they've helped (or appreciated).
But they're Ali's family, so it's her call on whether to allow it again or set firmer ground rules.
I'm happy to play the bad guy, but it's her decision.
