With his all of 2 caps...
Stuart Abbott and Ollie Smith the centre partnership that should have been.fivepointer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 11:31 am Stuart Abbott. 9 caps in 4 years. Should have had a lot more.
absolutely massive fan at the time- posted continually about it! Nice lad, coaches at my club now.
He bust his leg, wasn't quite the same after. Good partnership with Fraser Waters iirc.fivepointer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 11:31 am Stuart Abbott. 9 caps in 4 years. Should have had a lot more.
yep, Ollie was very good. IIRC ruined by a Lions tour? (SCW)FKAS wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 11:44 amStuart Abbott and Ollie Smith the centre partnership that should have been.fivepointer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 11:31 am Stuart Abbott. 9 caps in 4 years. Should have had a lot more.

ah yes, I remember, never quite the same player.Epaminondas Pules wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 12:01 pmHis dad died suddenly before the tour, which was a shitter
That coupled with knowing he was a dirt tracker from day one didn't help. Think he lost a bit of love for the game, and where the move to France helped reinvigorate him. Just then the bloody knee injury(s) did for him Think he was only 27 or 28 when he retired.Banquo wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 12:04 pmah yes, I remember, never quite the same player.Epaminondas Pules wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 12:01 pmHis dad died suddenly before the tour, which was a shitter
12 has been a bit of a theme these past...20 years. As Mikey said.

Don't think Andy Robinson liked him either, if memory serves he omitted him even though he was playing well and that seemed to knock his confidence a bit.Epaminondas Pules wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 12:07 pmThat coupled with knowing he was a dirt tracker from day one didn't help. only 11 games for quins before wrecking his knee.FKAS wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 2:24 pmDon't think Andy Robinson liked him either, if memory serves he omitted him even though he was playing well and that seemed to knock his confidence a bit.Epaminondas Pules wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 12:07 pmThat coupled with knowing he was a dirt tracker from day one didn't help. Loffreda was another one that didn't seem to accept he'd help the midfield until towards the end of his solitary season at the helm and Ollie had already agreed the move to Brive
Knee injuries certainly blighted his career. Never made the impact I thought he'd have at Quins due to those injuries.
Yeah, in the infamous Mathew Tait debut against Wales, Ollie Smith was the form 13 in Europe, but Tait was new and shiny and the media's favourite and Robinson got the selection badly wrong.FKAS wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 2:24 pmDon't think Andy Robinson liked him either, if memory serves he omitted him even though he was playing well and that seemed to knock his confidence a bit.Epaminondas Pules wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 12:07 pmThat coupled with knowing he was a dirt tracker from day one didn't help. Yes, Ollie only relinquished his season ticket and his spot next to his dad at Welford Road when he started playing for the first team I believe.Puja wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 5:31 pmYeah, in the infamous Mathew Tait debut against Wales, Ollie Smith was the form 13 in Europe, but Tait was new and shiny and the media's favourite and Robinson got the selection badly wrong.FKAS wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 2:24 pmDon't think Andy Robinson liked him either, if memory serves he omitted him even though he was playing well and that seemed to knock his confidence a bit.Epaminondas Pules wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 12:07 pm

The main thing was losing his dad suddenly though. That relationship was intertwined with his love for rugby and he was never the same player after that.
