The Burkini is Back

Post by rowan »

Does seem to be a bit pointless and even Islamopobic given surfies and divers can go down to the beach in full-body wetsuits (as has been pointed out repeatedly in the press and social media over the last few days), while one couple was even photographed peacefully dozing on a French beach in their motorcycle uniforms - including helmets. The only outcome of that ridiculous law would have been to radicalize more young Muslims in Europe so that any future attacks they carried out might be blamed on ISIS as an excuse for NATO to overthrew more regimes and occupy more Middle Eastern nations. Wait a minute...

France's highest administrative court has suspended a ban on full-body "burkini" swimsuits that was imposed in a town on the Mediterranean coast.
The ban in Villeneuve-Loubet "seriously and clearly illegally breached fundamental freedoms to come and go, freedom of beliefs and individual freedom", it found.
The ruling could set a precedent for up to 30 other towns that imposed bans.
The court will make a final decision on the legality of the bans later.
Correspondents in France say the court's decision means that all the bans on burkinis are likely now to be overturned but one mayor in Corsica has already vowed to keep the ban in place on his town beach.
A human rights group, the Human Rights League (LDH), and an anti-Islamophobia association (CCIF), brought the ban in Villeneuve-Loubet to the court's attention.
Patrice Spinosi, a lawyer for the LDH, said outside court that people who had been fined could claim their money back.
'Public humiliation'
Amnesty International welcomed the court's decision. The human rights group's Europe director, John Dalhuisen, said it had "drawn a line in the sand".
He said: "French authorities must now drop the pretence that these measures do anything to protect the rights of women.
"These bans do nothing to increase public safety but do a lot to promote public humiliation."
The burkini bans have ignited fierce debate in France and worldwide.
Opinions polls suggested most French people backed the bans, which town mayors said were protecting public order and secularism.
Muslims said they were being targeted unfairly.
The court said local authorities did not have the power to restrict individual liberties in this way without "proven risk" to public order.

Btw, the bikini itself was named not for the Pacific atoll but for an atomic explosion in 1946, one of a series which contaminated the area and undoubtedly led to many deaths among the natives. :(
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

Human rights vs security of the many is a balancing act. In this instance, I could never see what the point was. And to be fair, the last time I was on a beach and saw far too many examples of fat women in skimpy outfits, I'd be tempted to lean the other way have have a bikini police. If in doubt cover up.

The burka ban is basically condescension, bigotry and concern trolling. Stupid bullshit, basically.

as a Frenchman, I will share my opinion.

First I want to point out that all this saga was ridiculous, something to fill in the vacuum left by the non newsworthy summer holidays,
That banning the Burkini would have the opposite effect and would promote it.

I don't believe the gov should have any say in what women wear, but it really grinds my gears that the burkini was paraded by some as a symbol of women's freedom.

I don't think people in the UK and abroad, understand just how France sees itself as a secular nation. France's Gov has been separated from the Catholic church since 1906. The third Republic wanted to get rid of this interfering and especially Monarchist, institution that was the catholic church. Since then, people are told, from a young age that you shouldn't come to School with any religious signs, including, cross, Kipa, and veil. The Idea is that your religion should be personal and invisible to the rest of society. Proselytism is also looked down upon. This is why the Veil, Burkini, Burka cause such a stir in France. I'm not denying that the Fascists and racists hate it for other reasons, but it's not easy for the other Political Currents to defend it.

French politicians, are playing dangerous games, 1 year from the elections. It just highlights the dire state of French Political representation at the moment.

edit: when the veil comes up, the gov are usually trying to stick it to us with something else.
