Edinburgh’s match against Zebre is being moved from Saturday night to Friday night because the pope’s funeral is on Saturday.

Lots of injuries and rested players this week. Schoeman, Gilchrist and Ritchie rested, I assume they’ll be back next week but Schoeman might bench against Bath. Graham returns as does Watson although I’d have preferred Douglas to have got a start. Cherry & Ashman both injured so Harrison gets a chance to start. Paterson gets another start and Brown gets his first start, both were decent against Sharks although Brown failed to get the ball to ground over the line.

H Paterson; D Graham, M Currie, J Lang, J Brown; R Thompson, A Price; B Venter, P Harrison, D Rae, G Young, S Skinner, B Muncaster, H Watson, M Bradbury.
Subs: H Morris, R Hislop, A Williams, G Gilchrist, F Douglas, C Shiel, C Scott, M Tuipulotu

Unavailable: Ewan Ashman (shoulder), Emiliano Boffellli (hamstring), Connor Boyle (knee), Robert Carmichael (wrist), Dave Cherry (knee), Luke Crosbie (pec), Tom Dodd (shoulder), Wes Goosen (back), Jamie Hodgson (tricep), Paul Hill (back), Ross McCann (foot), Jamie Ritchie (rest), Javan Sebastian (concussion), Pierre Schoeman (rest), Matt Scott (neck), Marshall Sykes (foot), Duhan van der Merwe (ankle), Ben Vellacott (foot), Lewis Wells (ankle).

Edinburgh have signed James Whitcombe, a 24 year old loosehead, from Leicester Tigers on a 3 year deal. He’s Scottish qualified through a Falkirk born granny. He seems to have been a regular in their squad (mostly off the bench) this season. He’s young for a prop so plenty of time for him to develop but I wonder who’ll make room for him. Presumably Hislop but if Schoeman and Venter are still in Edinburgh how much game time will he get?

They’ve just announced another prop signing. Rhys Litterick, a 26 year old tighthead from Cardiff on a 2 year deal. Scottish qualified through a Glasgow grandad.

Watson is getting another year at Edinburgh when it was widely thought he’d leave. Not sure how I feel about that, I want Douglas to get more game time.

Harry Paterson has signed a 2 year contract extension. That’s definitely good news.

For Edinburgh and Scotland it would probably be best if he moved on. For Everitts coaching career it might make sense not to have to rely on callow players who make mistakes and he'd argue that if Douglas can't beat him out then he's not the talent that we think he is.

The worrying alternative is that Boyle has had a setback in his recovery and this is insurance.

It's borderline negligent.

Douglas and Muncaster are young capped 7s. Crosbie is capped at 7. That's plenty of cover plus playing a 6 or 8 on safari as emergency cover would be fine.

Edinburghs handling of young forwards is a disgrace.

Edinburgh and Bath teams. Goosen back from injury, rested players returning but I can’t see anything other than a big win for Bath. They’ve been scoring big points in the English Premiership and I can’t see Edinburgh stopping them. I’m going to this one, I’m looking forward to watching Finn really close up, but it could be a painful afternoon for Edinburgh.

Edinburgh: W Goosen; D Graham, M Currie, J Lang, H Paterson; R Thompson, A Price, P Schoeman, E Ashman, D Rae, S Skinner, G Gilchrist, J Ritchie, H Watson, M Bradbury. Subs: P Harrison, B Venter, J Sebastian, M Sykes, B Muncaster, C Shiel, B Healy, M Tuipulotu.

Unavailable for Edinburgh: Emiliano Boffellli (hamstring), Connor Boyle (knee), Robert Carmichael (wrist), Dave Cherry (knee), Luke Crosbie (pec), Tom Dodd (shoulder), Jamie Hodgson (tricep), Paul Hill (back), Ross McCann (foot), Cammy Scott (groin), Matt Scott (back), Duhan van der Merwe (ankle), Ben Vellacott (foot), Lewis Wells (ankle).

Bath: T de Glanville; J Cokanasiga, C Redpath, W Butt, W Muir; F Russell, B Spencer, B Obano, T Dunn, T du Toit, Q Roux, G Pepper, S Underhill, M Reid. Subs: N Annett, F van Wyk, W Stuart, R Molony, T Hill, L Schreuder, C Donoghue, A Barbeary.

Taking the team listing's from TOL leaves Bath a player short of a start lock

Bath largely been on top but that’s a flattering scoreline towards the end. Some good Edinburgh performances, but just too patchy again.

Currie continues to impress me. Thomson was better than I’ve seen before as well.

Bath were just too powerful up front and had a more impactful bench than Edinburgh. Edinburgh hung in until about the 70th minute but part from the two scores the entire second half seemed to be played at the Edinburgh end and something had to give eventually. Ashman, as expected had some lineout howlers.

Edinburgh sign two wingers. Finlay Doyle played for the Scotland U20 last season. Malelili Satala is signed from Leicester Tigers but he was born in Edinburgh thanks to his dad Apolosi Satala, an ex-Fiji international, who was in the army and was stationed here when his son was born. Both look to be 20 years old, so presumably they are signed with a view to developing them for the future.

Never recall seeing either play but, if they think they are ready for gametime, then sounds sensible given shortages there recently. With Goosen, Graham, and VDM as forst choice, I think they need to truat the youngsters after that (assuming Bofelli leaves).

Patterson, Wells, Brown Al already in the mix. Sweeney and Henry still on the books AFAIK, Moncrief in the academy, McKnight currently with them. Collecting bac, 3 players like they have been Collecting young back rows. And not playing them

Would prefer they collect a couple of hookers that could throw straight. The only one seems to be heading to France.

Gilchrist rested, Ritchie out with concussion and no place for Douglas but at least McConnell should get some game time off the bench in the back row. Jack Brown gets another start, so with Harrison on the bench there are at least some young players in the squad. Should have started Harrison though.

Shiel has played a bit of 7s in the past.

Thompson has shown glimpses of some good stuff. Probably Edinburgh's 1st choice going into next season.

Thompson has been first choice all season. Healy has been injured for much of it but even when fit he wasn’t getting starts, except for the occasional A team game that Edinburgh had. I think Thompson is a good player but his kicking from both hand and tee need improvement.
