I’m just old enough to have seen play in 1978. At this distance, to be honest, I’ve no great memory of him but he was undoubtedly one of the greats for both Scotland (43 caps) and the Lions (8 test caps and only one defeat). Different times - those 43 caps took 11 years, a player could get that in 5 or 6 quite easily now.

I’ve just checked his weight. He was 92kg or 14 stone 7 pounds!

Noooo absolutely gent, met him once on the ferry to Mull, we were going over for a game and playing some stupid rugby drinking game to pass the time and he came over to say hi - he knew the older guys in our club. Such a nice man and you could just see the old school rugby values in him. A genuine great of Scottish rugby, probably under recognised just how good he was. RIP fella, you've earned a decent rest.
It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
