Gun running in Romania

Post by Digby »

Sky News recently ran a broadcast on the smuggling and sale of guns in Romania, which would be fine except the story they broadcast seems to have been fabricated

I haven't actually heard anything as to what's happening about what seems a truly god awful piece of reporting even by Sky's low standards, anyone know the latest?

Afraid not. The only thing of interest I've heard about Romania in the news lately is that they may be headed for reunification with Moldova. That creates an interesting prospect in rugby terms, as the latter have been one of the more exciting up-and-comers in European competition over the past decade or so, reaching the 4th round of the latest RWC-qualifiers, and beating Holland in its most recent ENC division 1B fixture. They seem to be a bit of a production line for talented front-rowers with Dmitri Arhip and the Cobilas brothers plying their trade in the English Premiership. Not sure how much any of this would help Romania, but it certainly won't hurt - if it happens, of course.
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

I seem to recall Moldova might end up with a team in SuperLiga. But they do need to be careful of costs, and Romania isn't the easiest country to travel around.

On the gun running story I think it's possible Sky are saying the story is a true one, by which they might mean the subject matter might be one which be getting discussed even if the actual footage they showed was something of a fanciful recreation rather than an actual news items. Frankly even for Sky News this looks a bit of a low to not simply slant coverage (deliberately or otherwise) but to flat out make it up
