Re: Solly's Soul Destroyers
There are things that Watson does better than Hardie tbf. Like tackling, as much as I like Hardie his technique is so poor. Misses way too many and ends up with a sair heid a lot due to poor technique.

I have some sympathy with the argument that he affects the play a lot by charging out, but often is unlikely to really get his man.

And a better pass on him than the hyphenated one. Watson at 9, you know it makes sense.

I saw a tweet last night suggesting SHC should move to FB. Think it was tweeted by one of the guys that runs Scrum Magazine.hp18 wrote:And a better pass on him than the hyphenated one. Watson at 9, you know it makes sense.
Speaking of players that have moved position, how did Bryce get on at prop?

Might be time to send SPHC to Prem 1 or the 7s to try and get some confidence and give McAndrew* a go with Edinburgh or steal George Horne on loan.
* Not sure how he is going with Melrose, but seemed to be highly rated not long ago.

Aye. That's the stuff. We don't have many genuinely aggressive players. Why is that?Edinburgh in Exile wrote:They are both superb players.

And why the fuck does every other team seem to have a neon/fluorescent kit? Is it a distraction technique?

Re: Solly's Soul Destroyers
I rather think that was my point. Those are the highlights that I remember about Watson but I don't think that he'll ever manage to pull that off consistently at a higher level. He may still be in the running for the back-up slot but that doesn't mean that we're in a good position.Mikey Brown wrote:Aye. That's the stuff. We don't have many genuinely aggressive players. On SHC he looks to be second guessing himself. Wouldn't be the first player to have early success then stumble a bit when trying to improve. My concern is which coaches are trying to improve him. I'd rather he used what made him good in the first place and improved rather than becoming a conservative, boring Solomon's player. It's not unlike when Laidlaw broke through. He had a sevens back-ground and used to come off the bench to up the tempo and try to make things happen. Then he went away from that game and became more 'structured' rather than managing to combine that with his instinctive skills.

Re: Solly's Soul Destroyers
I guess that's the cycle. When you can't make it off the bench for Laidlaw by running fast and passing fast, I suppose you end up trying to replicate what Laidlaw now does.
I'm not sure what you think I was refuting about your point, I just enjoyed the clip. I suppose we should see if he can do it at the top level at some point.
Though it was a nicely timed pass from 22 he doesn't seem to understand that being in front of the ball isn't much use.

You think that we should give him a shot at the next level, I'm not so sure because I think that at least four players would have made that tackle at international level and want to see him improve other parts of his game first. I liked watching it on Friday very much though.Mikey Brown wrote:I guess that's the cycle. Valid point cat man, and I know this isn't the point you are arguing, but seeing as I'm being a bank holiday fud... aren't about three of those guys there internationals? Toner is, not sure about the other forward, is that Richardt Strauss? Think the winger was the lesser Kearney.switchskier wrote:You think that we should give him a shot at the next level, I'm not so sure because I think that at least four players would have made that tackle at international level and want to see him improve other parts of his game first. Toner obviously is and I think that the prop is McGrath. Can't work out the winger but don't think it's Kearney and the nine and ten are pretty young and callow.Edinburgh in Exile wrote:Valid point cat man, and I know this isn't the point you are arguing, but seeing as I'm being a bank holiday fud... aren't about three of those guys there internationals? The 9 is Jamison Gibson-Park, a kiwi import with a decent amount of Super Rugby experience.switchskier wrote:Toner obviously is and I think that the prop is McGrath. Anyway, Watson is really aggressive and seems to enjoy running over people. The kind of rumbustious wing forward we have dearly lacked for a number of years.

Team's out. Looks like some planned rotation and we're effectively giving this one away. That back line can only be effective with a really high paced, high risk type of game plan but we know that we're not going to see that.

Utterly humped in the scum but another decent showing from the backrow. I thought Watson and Hardie were good and Bradbury really deserved the MoM.
ps Twice in a row now Kinghorn has come on late in the game and demonstrated that he appears to be the only Edinburgh back that can find gaps in the defence. He needs to start.

Weirs defence was also embarassing. He is in need of some decent coaching, both technically and for his confidence.Matt Ha wrote:Utterly humped in the scum but another decent showing from the backrow. I thought Watson and Hardie were good and Bradbury really deserved the MoM.

Pretty grim viewing though wasn't it. Whomever pointed out that it was like watching Scotland of old nailed it, the backs look so fucking rudderless at times. The passing in the last 30 minutes or so of that game was just, fucking, brutal.

Re: Solly's Soul Destroyers
Just rewatched the first half. Edinburgh weren't doing that badly. I mean the scrum was poor but the teams was doing pretty well in defence and there were some attack patterns. Centres were pretty young as well and had never played a game together before. With a decent front row, more discipline and experience it could turn into a good team.

If the ball carrier make a break he seems as surprised as the rest of the team....which is why they are usually 10 metres behind looking the wrong way and aligning themselves for the next breakdown instead of being on the shoulder.
Looks like a team struggling to buy in to the particular game plan being asked of them and/or without the skill set to carry it out.
Much like Scotland were.

Re: Solly's Soul Destroyers
Just as Scotland did at the time, they are missing a good 10, and a good centre combo. This was not Edinburgh's "A-team". Both centres looked a bit light, and were given poor ball.
We should also point out that Ed defended well will Mackenzie in the bin and even scored a try.
I'm slightly optimistic and believe that Ed will improve throughout the Season... A bit in the same way I did with Scotland during the bleak years*...
*are they over yet?
