Bloody NASA and their waste of time and money inventions. I mean, who needs their water filters, cochlear implants or insulin pumps.

It's not true.

1. NASA and Russia both used pencils, initially, until the late 1960s.

2. It was recognised that wooden pencils were not ideal for space flight being flammable (a problem in high oxygen environments) and leaving little splinters and chunks of conductive graphite floating about.

3. The space pen was privately developed, independently of NASA which did not pay a single cent in development costs, which were reported to about $1 million.

4. Both NASA and Russia purchased a few hundred of these commercially available pens for about $2 or $3 each for use in space.

Still, the moral of the story is a good one.
