Since when has Hamilton been known as the 'Tron - and why??

Hamilton has it for a two year contract, differences from Welllington;
- Smaller city Hamilton has about 230k, Wellington 410k
- No international airport- 1.5hrs to Auckland Airport on a good day; also less accommodation
- FMG/Waikato Stadium Capacity is at 26,000 + some temporary, Westpac Stadium 34,000
- No warm up room next to field- teams will have to warm up on surrounding fields
- By far the smallest city on the circuit, Wellington was already

'Tron comes from the joke slogan "Hamiltron - City of the Future."

I believe it may have originated from Student radio when Hamilton was getting a new actual slogan. Not sure though.

Hamilton is way less shit than it was 20-odd years ago.

Population-wise everywhere north of Taupo is growing steadily, the lower North Island is fairly static and the South Island is gradually shrinking. When I was a kid Hamilton had just passed the 100 K threshold and was beginning to challenge Dunedin for 4th biggest status, much to the southerners' indignation. Wellington and Christchurch were both around 350 K and Auckland had about twice that. But Auckland has doubled in size since then while Wellington has added 50K simply by connecting the Kapiti Coast to its outskirts, so far as I can tell. Hamilton has more than doubled in size, and Tauranga, a beach resort for hippies not so long ago, now shows up as the nation's 5th biggest city with 130 K. Dunedin comes in at 7th with 120 K, behind Napier & Hastings now combining for population purposes (130 K), which is fair enough. Palmy is where it's always been, with about 80 K in 8th spot, while Invercargill (5th or 6th biggest city at one time, I believe) has dropped down to 13th with 50 K - having also been overtaken for 3rd in the South Island by Nelson (65K). The entire South Island (which is bigger and warmer than England) has precisely one million people - half a million less than the city of Auckland. The North Island has 3.5 million - about a million more than it did in the 1970s.

Thats for the social studies lesson. I just got back from NZ, mainly in the SI. Hear this. If you ever want to feel good about your lot in life, go to an Invercargill take aways at about 5:30 on a weekday night and watch the ruddy faced beady-eyed Southland kids kill time waiting for their deep fried dinner of champions by visiting violence on anything inanimate or younger than them while their 23 year old mum stares vacantly into a mobile phone.
