Clifford carrying very well today though.
That's Roberts' usp to be honest (though not wholly unique)

Yep, maybe it's unfair to pile it all on him but he's achieved it in about 3 games since we've signed him. Massive waste of money. I really hope Saili can do more.

Our kit is horrible.

We just don't have a plan. Still. Can we ditch Kingston after one game of the season?

Irish are just better at present. Quins lacking leadership tbh.

Great stuff from Irish- I hate the phrase, but they 'wanted it more'.

It's a very reductive statement.

They basically went out to smash anything that moved and work from there, Quins were basically too inept to do anything about it.

I had Cowan as man of the match, with Ojo as a next choice. The fact that an established top level side, choc full of current and fringe England internationals, weren't able to raise the speed of the game enough to make those two ineffective says all you need to know.

Yup. Very little direction, aggression, leadership or any real sense of a game-plan. The number of loose passes we throw is insane. Luamanu's at the end was a belter. We just don't seem to be able to go two minutes without a stupid blunder. The endless fucking around 600 miles behind the gainline is painful to watch as well.

At one point I was wondering if the aimless play was due to an 18 year-old fly half. Then I remembered who your coach is.

Thanks for that piece of patronage.

My apologies to Irish. Completely misread that one and they turned in an excellent performance. Quins were rubbish, but it was a good result to put them away.

On holiday so I missed the game, but it sounds as though Quins were terrible. Conceding 39 points to a newly promoted side is unforgivable.

As I said earlier in the thread, I never expected us to hammer them by 50 points, but I did expect a comfortable win.

We're there any positives to take away from the performance? How did Smith do?

Didn't manage the whole game, but he didn't really have a chance to do much... The shite storm around him kinda put paid to that.

Looked pretty sparky and wasn't shy about going in to contact but a few moments of real inaccuracy as well. Though that's true of everyone in the team. More use than Catriakilis, no question.

He takes it to the line really well, but was initially stood so deep that it was hard to make it count. He would accelerate to the line but not find anyone on his shoulder as often as you'd like. There were a couple of classy moments in there.

So overall I can see why people have been making a fuss, but there is a long way to go. Yes he got battered by Tikoirutuma and had to go off, but has already managed to show more grit than I've ever seen from Mallinder.

I know it's just one game, but what happens if we get relegated?

It's plausible we can keep hold of Marchant, Smith will get a full season leading the line at 10 in less high profile games, and we would lose most of the deadwood like Roberts, Stanley, Visser...

But we would also lose some of our only bright sparks. I doubt Sinckler would stick around with an England spot at stake, while would Robshaw's club loyalty hold sway with a World Cup spot up for grabs? What about Marler? Horwill would surely leave, Yarde too.

It's crazy to think that we find ourselves in this insane position again. We need fresh blood.

This is an interesting point ...

As much as it would be very bad news in the short term, I wonder whether it might actually be of longer term benefit and could be the wake-up call needed.

Now that the play-offs have been scrapped, there's less risk of going down and no coming back up which might help us keep some of the higher profile players and lose some of the deadwood as you said. Having said that though, the timing wouldn't be great as our England players would be less likely to stay in a World Cup year. Robshaw would probably keep his place, but it would be a real gamble for Marler, Care and Brown with competition from the likes of Genge, Maunder and Watson (as a 15).

I don't think relegation is a real threat as I think we're capable of a lot more than at least London Irish and Worcester across the course of a season. If we do have a bad season and finish 10th, that may be enough to spark the change needed.

I would have thought the last few seasons as a whole would have been a wake-up call, but then we beat Sarries or claw back an unlikely win and everything is peachy.

Starting from Kingston down, we are just was too fucking soft.

We've signed poorly for years. We don't seem to have any kind of game-plan except desperately attempting to cling on to what worked in 2012. We have let our stock fall so far that I imagine it's now a lot harder to draw in a star. We've done very well with Horwill, Jones it seems has offered a lot off the pitch but nothing on it, and Roberts must be earning about £50K per line-break since he has joined.

I don't think we'll get relegated, but it suddenly seems a whole lot more real that we could.

where? In the team, or coaching? Starting team looked to have plenty of ability and potential to play well.
