Exactly. What the fuck are we going to learn from Brown at 7?

I was pretty surprised at first but after the initial madness I can actually see some method in this madness. Going into theMikey Brown wrote:Exactly. What the fuck are we going to learn from Brown at 7?
RWC we have a limited squad size and calling in replacements can always disrupt things. If Brown can hold his own against a pretty decent Argentine backrow then I think he gives us a whole lot of flexibility when coming to selecting the squad. It means that you can include someone like Denton who can only really play the one role without worrying too much about injuries and gives you flexibility in the 23.
Don't understand the centers at all though. It's just too lightweight.

Re: Summer Tour Squad
A fair point switch, but, and perhaps I’m not remembering this right, but it seems to me that Brown is one of the most injury prone players in our squad. Might as well throw John Hardie in as a backup flyhalf whilst we are at it.

Where are we on Townsend being a far better selector than Vern?hugh_woatmeigh wrote:Speechless. What a f*cking idiot this man is sometimes.
Will I ever forget that proclamation of yours?
Seems doubtful.

Yeah, I am surprised by Ritchie not playing.Big D wrote:I don't get Townsends obsession with Swinson or Grigg.
Surely we'd learn more by starting Ritchie?
On Grigg, I was pleased to see him get his chance at the beginning but he has had it and I think it should be bench at best for him now. If he does great from there then he can maybe have another shot but he really hasnt shown much starting.

I wonder if he sees it as a pragmatic selection in a wierd horses for courses kind of way. We keep getting bullied by big powerful sides. Brown is one of our best tacklers and he is paired with our two most physical back rows.Mikey Brown wrote:Exactly. What the fuck are we going to learn from Brown at 7?
Still strange though

Re: Summer Tour Squad
We have a bunch of incredibly promising flankers and need to get some game-time into them.
I could understand looking at Brown as a RWC squad option if he could ever actually stay fit or we had a whole bunch of decent hookers.
I just can't see us coming out of this tour with any concrete opinions about any of the players. Not positive ones anyway.

Re: Summer Tour Squad
The three hookers will most likely be McInally, Brown and Turner (maybe Ford if he can find form). If you go into a World Cup knock out game with McInally starting and say a backrow of Barclay, Watson and Wilson you probably want a big ball carrier on the bench like Denton. However if Watson goes down injured early then Brown might actually be th better option to bring on, if you know that he can hack it.Mikey Brown wrote:We have a bunch of incredibly promising flankers and need to get some game-time into them.

I also fell like we will know after the Argentina game whether Kinghorn is ready or still at the flat track bully stage.

Knew there would be some frothing on here about that team selection. Although Brown is probably the best turnover exponent left in the squad.
They’ll get outmuscled I think. 9-13 tiny.

Actually not convinced about our back row options - we’ve been weak there for some time. Denton is laughably described as our big ball carrier. He gets through some work but falls over a lot and unbelievably for a number 8 has never scored a try for Scotland (I think). What we have is a collection of skillful ball players (Watson, Barclay) but they just get crushed in contact by the gym monkeys that other teams pick.Mikey Brown wrote:We have a bunch of incredibly promising flankers and need to get some game-time into them.

I really meant that we need to look at some of the options that might supplement the 4 incumbents. I agree with you about their limitations, but don’t particularly think Brown may be the solution.

Re: Summer Tour Squad
Our back row issues are at 6 and 8 though. Watson, Barclay and Hardie are all fine no.7s. If he wanted to check hooker flexibilty then Rambo to 6 or 8 would be a more logical choice imo. Shoehorning Swinson and Brown into the back row is very questionable and doesn't really answer any questions.ARM wrote:Actually not convinced about our back row options - we’ve been weak there for some time. Re: Summer Tour Squad
What would anyone realistically like to see that might make this tour a bit more of a success?
I feel a big performance from Bradbury or Hastings would be massive for me.
Denton looking like he can make game changing contributions while holding his all-round game together would be fantastic.
One of the locks to really own that shirt next to J Gray?
McInally nailing his line outs would be massive too.
I’m really rooting for Bhatti, Ritchie, Horne etc. but their performances perhaps aren’t as key this Scotland team in the very short term?
Yeah, I’m stuck waiting for a train and bored out of my mind.

Townsend to show a more canny use of the bench would be nice too.

I was actually in the process of giving out to him for passing back inside instead of to Hogg on his outside when Wee Turbo Horne scored. I know nothing about rugby union.OptimisticJock wrote:Hastings did well enough there.Edinburgh in Exile wrote:Nice try. Good break, good finish.

I don't think that's going to be an issue after Rambos try there.Edinburgh in Exile wrote:Didn’t we start like this against the mighty USA?OptimisticJock wrote:I meant the RGs obviously.OptimisticJock wrote:Pumped
