At a guess, I'd suggest PRL rules on playing outsidde of IRB9.
Possibly the Newcastle pair to do likewise; possibly Newcastle preferring to take their £60k fine and keep the players happy - although they're both lat additions, so that might get them through.

ETA: If that was the casem, surely McGinty would sit out, but stay with the squad?

Agree, but it should be cleared with the employer first, before the invitation is annouced so that there is not all this chopping and changing. It is still something of an honour to play for the Barbarians. Imagine what it means to a player like McGinty to be selected, only to find that your club will then not let you play. I know the game is all hard nosed professional now, there are injury worries etc.., but at this stage of the season Sale has nothing to play for. Would it have hurt to allow the lad a run and a great rugby experience?
