Taylor and Thomas left years and years ago though - it's hardly as though they're losing quality tight 5 hand-over-fist.

Taylor certainly left fairly recently and under Diamond, I forget who was in charge when Thomas left, and they have spent since Taylor left. They may not be spending the cap but they have focused on big names in the backs to boost their results, even paying a release for Solomona, over recruitment in the tight five
And that’s been a pattern of behaviour over a number of seasons, and imo they should have planned better over the period and not be in a position of saying we'd be looking better had SARU been more willing to oblige
Taylor left at the end of the 2016 season and Thomas in 2014, so that's 2.5 and 4.5 years respectively.
I think we're actually arguing the same point - Sale have chronically underinvested in their tight 5 and it's not been something outside of their control which can be excused.

Strong rumours Sale made sizeable offers for Launchbury and Mostert, but were knocked back.
Think their belief/strategy is that they have enough decent to good players, plus a strong academy, so they’re mainly in the market for excellent, international calibre types. Just so happens that the ones they’ve managed to attract are backs.

You can see it all here:

And Sale's transfer business during that time doesn't make good reading...

That's not a bad strategy in theory, but it's clearly not working when their big tight 5 signing is James Phillips. They either need to apply more money to lure the Launchburys and Mosterts (and forgo the likes of Ashton) or set their sights lower on who they're targetting.

Thomas was a ways back, Taylor not so much when squad planning takes account or makes a guess at to what the academy will deliver and crucially has to consider when contracts will have run down on targets at other clubs
I did though get into this thinking it wasn't Sale haven't spent it's more where they're prioritising their squad development

I genuinely don't understand how he's kept his job for so long.
This article is too as hominem for me, but he had just been objectively poor. He's had the money to get players, but he's consistently underperformed.
He reminds me of Cockers In that he seems to be getting a pass for being a solid rugby man when he just lacks the intellectual and mental tools for the job he's in.
