Players don't get paid at age grade rep for provinces. Never used to anyway. Might be different now but I doubt it. I heard (from a reliable source) players used to be on benefits because they couldn't juggle rugby and work. Again it was a few years ago. Our NZ U20s probably get paid but it won't be much. I don't know much about academies in the UK but I'm guessing Saracens and the like can shell out more than Canterbury for example.

I image most U20 players are on something like this.

The entry point into the professional ranks for schoolboys is usually a provincial union development contract [capped at two years]. Typically $2500 is the going rate. These contracts can be topped up by a Super Rugby franchise to $7500: anything more than that and the excess has to count towards the ITM Cup salary cap.

Though I'm not sure what this rate refers to. Per game, perhaps? I haven't found anything relevant in the NZRPA documents.

Players in the UK who get an academy contract are on in the region of 11K/year. Not a lot of money tbh. Kiwis in the equivalent stage of their career are on better money than that if you don't do the exchange between dollars and pounds and go like for like.

IIRC the salary cap for academy players is £100k total; and no more than £20k per player. Most academies have 8-12 players in them to split that cap.

He can make as many excuses as he likes but against Wales NZ had plenty of ball and plenty of territory but mostly squandered it through poor basics.

Was a cracking performance. Have to say Wales compounded it early and were chasing the game from well the off really. Put them away superbly though. Seems like they got the kick up the arse they deserved and responded perfectly, albeit a week too late.

I've just had a look on the premiershiprugby site - they think it's still £100k, but only have the "details" for 2015-16; but they don't mention any change to the academy cap under "changes for next season".
I did note that it's cap per player is now £30k, not £20k; £30k is also the point where they'd automatically apply for "home grown academy credits"; and quite honestly, I can't see anyone paying that much to an academy kid and NOT promoting them to the senior squad; it just take's too much out of the academy squad.

Incidentally, the current number of academy players ranges from 4 (Leicester) to 16 (Worcester); averaging 10.8 players. This seems to be after removing those leaving or being promoted from the academy (as far as this is known) but not those added to replace them; so the real numbers will be higher. With the current reduced numbers; the average (mean) pay would be £9,231
