yep, was great veering between tragedy and comedy, and well scripted and acted.

Did anybody here watch Utopia when it was on a few years back? Rewatching it now and I'm still gutted they didn't carry it on. It was kind of mad but in a good way. Never seen anything quite like it.

Absolutely brilliant 1st season.
Rather forgettable 2nd season - left me not mourning the lack of a 3rd.

I watched the UK version of Criminal on Netflix earlier in the week, three episodes long, each episode is a different case, the first one is very good, the best acting I've seen from David Tennant.

I found it had diminishing returns from episodes 1 to 3, not unrelated to the diminishing quality of the guest actors. David Tennant is ridculously talented and his ability sells the first episode, but without the same quality the format doesn't stand up to my mind.

Yeah, the second and third episodes were underwhelming after the first one, I might give the German one a go over the weekend.

Finished it now. WT's assessment isn't totally unfair, or I guess surprising given that I literally didn't remember my first viewing of it from a couple of years back, but I still think the idea was amaizing. I think the second series actually started off really well, but got far too twisty-turny for its own good and lost its way somewhat.

The stylistic choices in the show were such a massive part of what made it work and what made it so interesting, so I'm very curious what direction that would go. I am assuming it will just be garbage but perhaps not. It has some surprisingly big names involved.

I don't really understand how the writer and creator of the original can be a writer on this version, yet Gillian Flynn is now the creator? I'd guess it's about using a big name to get the project going to be honest. I loved 'Sharp Objects' but thought 'Gone Girl' was awful, so I don't know what to expect from her interpretation/reimagining. If they're just doing a step by step remake it seems an odd choice.

Just watched episode one of Watchmen.

While this might grow to be a good series on its own terms (it's way too early to say), I have a big problem: it has practically no link with the comic (or the excellent film).

Other than the most superficial use of some of the original imagery this has nothing to do with Watchmen - the characters are different, the setting is different, the theme is different. Beyond some superficialities the only similarly is that the stories exist in alternate histories in which masked (and generally non-superpowered) characters assist in law-enforcement. The comic was predominantly concerned with the Cold War and impending armageddon (hence the clock ticking down) and the series with racial tensions within the US.

It seems like the series's creator had a story he wanted to tell and for some reason wrapped it in Watchmen imagery in order to sell it. But it's not even a reboot, it's an entirely different thing.

Accidentally watched some of ‘in the shadows’, thinking maybe the film was quite good (but maybe misremembering), was pretty awful.

I can’t believe there’s no succession discussion in here. It’s so much better than anything I’ve seen in the last few years. By fucking miles.

His Dark Materials - This is great telly, I haven't read the books mind you so not sure exactly how accurate it is.

The End of the Fucking World - Second series, if you liked the first one you'll enjoy this one, dark comedy.

Pretty accurate, although not slavishly so. For Northern Lights to make 8 episodes they're needing to pad it out a little. This probably won't be the case for the other books.

Also (as in the film) they felt the need to give the viewers a little explanation at the start for fear they would explode in confusion and indignation if they saw talking animals and river gypsies and airships over Oxford. The prologue with Asriel delivering Lyra to collage was another addition to make things crystal clear for the viewers. I mean, who could stand the suspense of not being completely sure who Lyra's father was for a couple of episodes?

It's well done though - even if James McAvoy isn't really menacing enough. So far, it's pretty much on par with the film for me. The real payoff, of course is that they'll (hopefully!) get to make the second and third parts. I wonder how daring they'll be with the more blasphemous stuff that comes later?

are they just doing Northern Lights or is it the whole trilogy.....seems too long for the former but too short for the latter. I liked the film , shame it didnt make enough dosh to follow up.

agreed on Mcavoy, lacks presence in this role.

eta - it is just Northern lights, and HBO have confirmed a second series

I am watching The Last Ship on Amazon at the moment and it is appallingly acted but so bad it’s good so far.

Really enjoying Succession

About fucking time.

Not sure if a TV show or a film.....but Springsteen on Broadway on Netflix is excellent, especially if a fan.

So yeah, the Mandalorian is pretty cool if you're looking for some good Star Wars.
