What a sham
The typhoon isn't going to cover the whole of Japan, if venue a is a typhoon risk the an alternative venue 300mi away is to be used, wouldnt have been too hard to stipulate beforehand........obviously money was the big issue here
Scotland game will go ahead but its a disgrace that the other 2 are not being played elsewhere

I think Dodson is a bit of a bully and quite a toxic person but glad to have him at the head of the SRU if this does get cancelled. He's going to try f*ck WR in any way possible. A more meek character would accept it and move on.

Apparently the contingency was to play in Tokyo - about 14km away.
And - in anticipation of some massive straw man arguments flying about, no one is suggesting that games should be played in Tokyo/Yokohama if it is dangerous to do so. All resources that are needed should be used to keep as many people safe as possible. What everyone is saying is that games could have been played elsewhere in front of empty stadiums if necessary

I don’t think it’s practical to try to move matches to avoid a 1000km wide storm when no-one knows exactly where it make landfall. Even if, at the last minute, you figure out there’s a safe stadium, how are you going to get the teams there safely?

How do you explain that they were confidant enough as far back as Thursday, to cancel some games and not others?Lizard wrote:I don’t think it’s practical to try to move matches to avoid a 1000km wide storm when no-one knows exactly where it make landfall. Because they had a good idea when it would hit.

The Ireland v Samoa game is 2 hours after the England v France game. Are you saying that they can’t predict where a typhoon will, but they can predict when it will hit within a 2 hour window, even though the when and the where are to some degree interrelated?Lizard wrote:Because they had a good idea when it would hit.

Re: World Cup cancellations
Could be worth adding that the Ireland v Samoa match was always going to be the latest KO time as well, and therefore, if was the most likely to be affected, given that they didn't know the locationStones of granite wrote:The Ireland v Samoa game is 2 hours after the England v France game. Its huge, but that is only being used to hide a huge fuck up.Lizard wrote:I don’t think it’s practical to try to move matches to avoid a 1000km wide storm when no-one knows exactly where it make landfall. if you identify alternative venues sufficiently far apart you have a sporting chance.
When you know roughly where landfall will be, you move the venue then- ie as they could have on wed/thurs last week, and you have a sporting chance
If you have those contingencies in place, as World Rugby assured all unions, you have a sporting chance.
If World Rugby apply all the terms of the participation agreement, (like the bit which allows WR to move or delay marches under their sole discretion) and not just one paragraph, you have a sporting chance
And then, if such contingencies as there are are applied equally to all teams and matches, you have a sporting chance.
But when there was a contingency for England v France (venue too close), and Ireland v Russia (not needed), and for NZ v Italy (delay but NZ refused to play); but by WR own admission NO contingency in place for Japan v Scotland, then you have no fucking chance
Not the same rules for everyone. Corrupt or inept. Matters not, no fucking chance.
And no chance the game will be played.

that was for the England France game. There was no contingency plan for Japan-Scotland according to Mr Gilpin (WR tournament director) in the Guardian. He could be lying if course to cover his tracks, which are full of inconsistent statementsCameo wrote:Apparently the contingency was to play in Tokyo - about 14km away.

Yep. The official lines coming out from WR are all over the place.septic 9 wrote:that was for the England France game. Re: World Cup cancellations
Exactly. Typhoons are regularly a few hundred miles in diameter - a contingency that involves moving 14 miles would never have been enough. A contingent that involves moving 400 miles would be expected to be enough - and probably not enough in this case, in which case, fine. A realistic contingency was out in place, but the disaster is just too big.septic 9 wrote:But when there was a contingency for England v France (venue too close), and Ireland v Russia (not needed), and for NZ v Italy (delay but NZ refused to play); but by WR own admission NO contingency in place for Japan v Scotland, then you have no fucking chance

All matches could have had a contingency involving moving to another stadium a few hundred miles away. Equally NZ (nor any other team) should not have the right to veto a contingency without forfeiting the match.
1 obviously insufficient contingency, 1 unacceptable, and 1 completely absent, doesn't scream consistency to me. They had 10 years to plan for a predictable event (a smaller typhoon), they chose not to, whilst claiming that they had.
Oh, and I for one, am perfectly capable of criticising World Rugby whilst feeling sympathy for the people of Tokyo. These things are not mutually incompatible. Absolutely nobody is saying that matches should be played in stadia that are unsafe disaster areas.

Re: World Cup cancellations
Judging by the live reports from Tokyo I reckon there is the square root of feck all chance of Japan vs Scotland going ahead tomorrow. This is not a shame; it is a calamity.
I agree with WT’s last paragraph and have nothing but sympathy for those poor sods who have to live in the paths of these things. But sticking a World Cup competition on top of them during Typhoon season will have done nothing to help and, for whatever reason it was decided to ignore these risks, the organisers/owners of the competition have shown themselves to be so incompetent I question their credentials to run this thing in future.
For what it’s worth, I have every confidence that if the game were played, Scotland would pull it out of the bag. Japan did not become world beaters overnight (or even over a couple of years).

I pretty much agree. If it is as bad as reported, then the game should not go ahead.SerjeantWildgoose wrote:Judging by the live reports from Tokyo I reckon there is the square root of feck all chance of Japan vs Scotland going ahead tomorrow. This is not a shame; it is a calamity.

With regard to your last paragraph, I wish I had as much confidence.

They're planning on holding the next one near the Syrian / Turkey boarder. I still don't understand why our fixture cannot be swapped with any of the other 3 being played tomorrow. Two are complete dead rubbers.
All fixtures should be postponed/rescheduled and completed before anyone lays into me. But if this is what it has come down to why on earth are games in which something is at stake not being prioritised?
I hope Dodson fucks Gilpin with a rusty bread knife.
