Why? What's wrong with winning by the best margin possible. Its a professional game these days
Was it the very last action of the game? If it was, then it's acting to deprive a team that is literally no threat to you any reward for their day's work, just because. 3 points extra difference isn't going to make a difference in the grand scheme - it would be just to annoy the opposition.
If it wasn't the very last action, then it's fair enough, cause you're never safe when you're <7 points ahead.
Bristol and Wasps could fairly realistically end up with an equal number of league points and wins at this point. Points difference is the next one. OK, Sale look fairly safe, but I don't think it's unreasonable to try and improve it as much as possible.

If points difference was that important, why not go for the try?

For the same reason you'd normally take the 3. You take the points on offer when you can.
It was the last play of the game and the score was 37-31 at the time. Going for the try and messing up could theoretically led to a 38-37 win for Tigers.

I honestly don't see the problem.
Going for the posts could theoretically have given the ball back to Leicester if they'd hit the post. The simplest option was to tap and kick dead and, if they'd been 20 points up, they probably would've done so. The point of the pen was to make sure Leicester got nothing.
Which is a perfectly valid option, I will note. It just feels a bit of a dick move considering the Leicester bonus point meant nothing to Sale.

If the league positions and score had been the other way around, would Leicester have been "nice" to Sale and allowed them the bonus point? Thought not.

Not a clue - been so long since we were at the top of the league that I can't remember! I feel like it wouldn't've been a concern to us whether you got the bonus point or not and we wouldn't've gone out of our way to make sure you didn't have it with the last kick, but that's possibly dementia setting in. I remember Saracens taking a penalty kick to get over 50 points when they beat our 2nd/3rd XV in the league some years back (back when putting 50 points on a Leicester team was a shock result, rather than just a Wednesday night fixture), so it isn't a case of "Only Sale would kick a pointless penalty to upset the opposition."
Either way, had the situation been reversed and Leicester had done the same, I would not have begrudged the Sale fans feeling like it was a dickish action to take. Cause it kinda is. However, as noted, a completely legitimate action and, if we needed the bonus point, we should have done better.
Watching it now. Lavinini "playing on the edge", the edge of just being offside repeatedly, nearly getting himself carded for it. Is he lazy? Or just stupid?

I think he was just eager to make the tackle and stop the try. It was hands in front of the line I think he got pinged for. Marginal but it's that area he's got to be a little smarter.
The yellow card warning came after a no arms tackle where he wrapped his right arm but the player bounced out of the initial contact. I don't think it would have been given if it wasn't Lavanini attempting the tackle. Both Ford and Lavanini looked pretty angry with the ref as he was explaining the decision. Not one Sale player seemed in the least bit fussed. Generally Lavanini played pretty well and took lineouts under a lot of pressure from Dr Jaeger. Still think Lavanini isn't hitting top gear though.

He got pinged for the same thing 3 times in a row...

Twice I think, in the space of about two minutes. The third penalty was the aforementioned tackle at which point the ref gave him a warning for conceding three penalties in quick succession. After that I'm not sure he gave away another one.
The two offsides were both from tap penalties, Tigers weren't the quickest back to the line which probably explains why a) Sale went for the quick tap and b) Lavanini didn't have time to take a second and check where his hands were. Ford Snr needs to sort that out because Chiefs used that as a tactic against us as well. Other teams will be taking notice as well. I would expect Wasps to give it a try tomorrow night for starters given the carrying power in their backrow.
I thought Sale did tap and go, and Lavinini just played on without ever bothering to get himself onside. Very lucky to stay on the field for even one of those
15.29 - no quick tap, just never got back onside after a ruck. 15.45 - that wasn't a quick tap, he had plenty of time to get onside before they tapped, but had a foot and both hands in front of the line, and even shuffled further forwards, absolutely stupid, then does exactly the same again. Nothing to do with having to rush to get in position, all to do with being braindead. I'd have been furious with someone on my side doing that, let alone someone in the premiership. Ref told Ford he'd have binned him if they hadn't scored.
