Apparently that's not an option. Happened in a Hurricanes game recently and the ref explained that he couldn't award a penalty try as a try had not been prevented (as it was scored anyway). Could definitely give the card though.

Seems like a very odd inconsistency to have in the lawbook and feels like it incentivises incompetence - if the Sale player hadn't put in the work to be following up and grounding it, then it would've been 7 points but, because he was diligent, it's only 5.

I'd also be in favour of penalty tries being awarded to the player who was denied the try by the foul play, rather than Mr P Try. Seems unfair to rob a player of their personal score.

One without the other doesn’t seem fair, but 2 points to whoever is the nominated kicker seems wrong as well, so I’m saying stick with it as is.

Feels harsh when it’s a winger who is a judged largely on try count, but I’d think most of these are rolling maul tries that would only be scored those bastard little hookers.
