The whole Birr thing is not easy to explain - feck, yes it is. Birr is the most boring hole on the planet.

See, 'tis aisy, so 'tis.
Well, yes. But in the interests of fairness, even handedness and balance, visitors to this board should also be informed that Birr has the largest telescope in Ireland, which was, indeed, the largest in the world until 1917. Commonly known as the Leviathan of Parsonstown.
Not many people know that.
Trouble was, they could not find a local Tornip who knew how to operate it. Nobody could figure out how to collapse it and get it intill the inside pocket.

These county boundaries are but lines on a piece of paper. They mean nothing to a heifer-loving, poteen-addled, six-fingered banjo player who's married to two of his cousins, wears an old suit jacket to muck out the byre, and would not know what county he's in anyway. It's all about genes, not maps. And the pool's quite a small one. The infusion of extraneous genetic material, even of a Zulu nature, can only be a good thing.

short answer..... didn't win enough games. especially big games that were there for the taking... Leinster (A) and Leicester (A). Both those games we were the better team and were hammering away at the try line with no reward. Also, worth pointing out that we only lost one more game than Ulster and lost the same amount as Leinster.

Win % Loss % Wins Losses
Connacht 67.7% 32.3% 21 10
Ulster 62.1% 37.9% 18 11
Leinster 60.0% 40.0% 18 12
Munster 57.1% 42.9% 16 12

Reasons for not winning enough games:
no openside cover... (played JOD, DOC2.0 out of position there regularly). when we did sign cover, Doyle, we were not allowed play him ahead of any irish player. similar rule prevented Mario Segario playing more at TH even though he was the best one we had.
NIQ injuries.... they affect all teams but after Xmas we had zero NIQ players fit.... Saili (occasionally), BJ, Chisholm, Van der Heever and Bleyendaal all crocked.
poor selections....I thought at one stage Keatley would never be dropped.

still, we did beat Ulster twice.

Beating Ulster who didn't have a head coach for half the season is no doubt your greatest achievement last year.

The hammering away at the line seemed to be symptomatic of a lack of cutting edge and ability to think your way out of problems. Certainly dealing from half a deck never helps as Ulster fans know only too well from last season.

without doubt. we played some braindead rugby when in good situations last season. the lack of intelligence throughout the team was a problem. rassie / nienaber should address this but we are still weak at tight head, specialist openside and half back cover.

the highlights from last year were CJs form, scannell and holland's emergence and the ulster games.

if we can get bleyendaal fit and playing regularly, we would a fix a few issues..........though he had never been an 80% goal kicker. i'd take 70% and some control.

POM has been asked to continue as captain, even though he is still rehabilitating after his injury his leadership has stood out on the training paddock

Thanks to CJ for stepping into the breech last season

How close is POM to being fit? He will make a significant difference to the team.

Quality journalism there, Dom. Anyone else would just have dumped a list of fixtures, but ye really add value with your interpretive reasoning.

Its almost like being there!

Tries by Cronin (Looking very streamlined), Zebo, Sweetnam, ROM, Keatley and Bohane - with a scrum penalty try to make up the 7.

Bleyendaal was 5/5 and Keatley 3/3.

All replacements in on 50 minutes and the hour so it doesn't appear to have added to Rassie's injury problems.

It was a warm late Summer evening, the sun had begun its inexorable decline into the dappled western sky and a soft breeze leapt and waned across the grey streets outside Musgrave Park. A gang of scruffy, apple cheeked urchins kicked an old tin can up and down the cobbles, jostling and shoving, their excited shouts echoing across the estate.
Slowly the pubs emptied, pint pots were upturned into eager thirsty mouths, the weeks work done and the anticipation of another Pro 12 season on the horizon, but drawing nearer and nearer with each passing moment. The talk bubbled and burst with enthusiasm for a new coach and new flyhalf, questions to be answered by the performances of the new heroes over the next few hours. The laughter rang out as observations and insights were treated with contempt or reverence depending upon the perceived wisdom of the dissenting voice.
Groups of men, gangs of lads, family, young and old alike, parents, children dolled up in the finest red jerseys, all strode up the road together, united in their love of Gods own province, the smell of fried onions and burgers wafting on the breeze...

Do you feel like yer there yet, Sarj?

Well that is just fecking woeful news for poor aul Johnny Holland! Good luck to the lad, but feck I was looking forward to seeing him make the 10 jersey his this season.

Now that Mrs O'Gara has gone public on the fact that the ROGs have no friends in Paris, is it too much to hope that he gives up on the Frog experiment and applies for asylum when 92 come for their trouncing in January?
