You chaps might want a new title for this thread now.

My dislike of the idea. It just makes me worry that we don't think he's totally okay and this is putting a dodgy plaster on a very serious wound.Cameo wrote:The scrum cap or you not liking it?Mikey Brown wrote:I really dont like the sound of that scrum-cap idea. Is that irrational?
I think (though I could be wrong) that studies say a Scrum cap won't reduce concussion but I can understand why Russel might want it if he also broke a bone in his face.
Incidentally I think one of the downsides is meant to be that they make you more reckless but not sure that applies to Russell as he is already fairly reckless with his body
It's dumb because I got a bunch of concussions and ended up wearing a scrum-cap myself. It's a strange mindset when you're worried about hitting your head all time (not that strange now that I write it down) that can make people (me) rather useless as players.

I only started wearing a scrumcap when my ears displayed a marked reluctance to stay attached to my head, and got fed up with regular visits to A&E to have them stitched up. I received at least one concussion wearing it (and one yellow card for tearing it off and chucking at a particularly stupid ref, like a fucking 4 year old)

Re: The Glasgow Carpet Burns and Cary Grant Appreciation Thread
Out of interest - the latest RFU concussion info-leaflets specify that scrum caps are of no benefit in preventing concussion, and may increase risk.
I see that several (online) shops also point out that they won't protect against concussion in the product description (about bloody time too). I give a talk on injury management at the local club most years; and specify that scrum caps don't protect, and if anything increase your chances of suffering concussion.
I've found that my demonstration or taping a scrum cap to the back of a cricket bat, and asking someone to head-but the unprotected side makes my point quite well (clue, the brain's INSIDE the skull - padding the outside doesn't help)

Yeah - saw that, but can't bring myself to watch it. Although I probably will as I've got a flyer today and will be suitably lubricated not to really notice how grim it is by then.Stones of granite wrote:No. We're getting another episode of the Benny Hill Show Edinburgh v someoneGeneral Zod wrote:Is this on tv tonight?
Think Glasgow have a tough game, having seen the teams. Will be impressed if they win.

Hmmm....it just occurs to me that "the dog has already been walked" could be interpreted as some kind of euphemism. But no. I took the dog out for a walk.

That's a tiny back line. Glasgow still capable of getting a result but Cardiff's big runners could do some damage on set plays.
Agree with most of the comments on the scrum cap. Pointless move.

I wore one a few times but was fed up of not hearing anything and would chuck it away at half time.

I wore one a few times in second row but found I was usually re-adjusting it while running, etc after a scrum. Tape, a number one crew cut and being too slow to get to rucks generally did the job.

Never wore one either, it was far to difficult for me to appreciate the sound of my own voice with it on. That and the only time I found myself in something as uneducated as a ruck was when one of you lot would lumber up 10 minutes too late for it and "accidentally" blast me into it just as I got my hands on the ball.General Zod wrote:I wore one a few times in second row but found I was usually re-adjusting it while running, etc after a scrum. Indeed, I suspect most of the time they tripped over their own arms trying to heave their knuckles off the ground.hp18 wrote:Surprised they could crouch that low.Edinburgh in Exile wrote:Never wore one either, it was far to difficult for me to appreciate the sound of my own voice with it on.
