Aussie whinging

Post by Lizard »

So apparently it's open season on refs and other officials over the ditch. Matt Burke is the latest to take aim with his sour grapes gun, and the 'Strine Whine is now audible from over the Tasman.

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-union/bledi ... r6qj3.html

The Franks incident has been done to death and I think we all agree that at least having a hearing would have been a better look. But to say there is some sort of systematic favouritism by cherry-picking a couple of alleged forward passes is petulism of the most boring kind.

Aussie rugby has got themselves into a real pickle.
-Their coach is plainly out of his depth
-Their captain is patently not the best (or even of international standard) in his position, and cannot perform the most basic task required in that position, namely hitting his lineout target
-Their captain also has some inherent quality that irritates referees so can't perfom the most basic task required of a captain
-They rely on an increasingly aging and injury-prone set of players now based overseas

So their solution is to lash out at the officials. Even then they get it wrong. Eddie Jones and Steve Hansen would have known that you accuse the officials of unconscious bias before the test matches, so that consciously over-correct to remove the accusation. Dumb old Aussie have timed this campaign worse than their own lineout jumping.*

You think they would be better off focussing on getting better at rugby, rather than whining on and on about old results. At the very least they should be playing mind games about the upcoming tests v South Africa, rather than about two historical hammerings that everyone admits would have happened in any event, even if the Jolly Swagman himself had been the ref.

*The best description of the Aussie lineout is in the latest Mud & Blood podcast - "Like a drunken rowing team attemtping to head butt a pub ceiling."

Like I said on the other thread. Refs don't miss tackles.

That article is excellent. I love it when Aussies do impressions of Poms.

Anything that starts "I'm not having a whinge, but..." is usually pretty good.

Honestly, the Aussie outrage has a stench of hypocrisy about it when their team, the so-called victims of the All Blacks and their brutality, came into the test all fists and elbows. It was basically like watching the 2002 Boks trying to beat up the English at Twickenham because they were a dumpsterfire of a team in comparison, and couldn't compete at the game at hand.

Yeah, it's like their cricket team. Chin music and tasteless sledging are all "part of the game" when they're dishing it out but when it comes back the other way it's apparently not okay. Not to mention that Aussie has "home advantage" while India has "pitch doctoring."

"Kafe and Marto" reckon the All Blacks lack humility and Shag is disrespectful. Oh, and the Wallabies weren't "niggly", they just "fronted up."

I'm almost tempted to cheer for the Springoks this weekend. Almost...

Yeah, fuck off old Walladicks. I would definitely be rooting for the Springboks, if a home win to Australia followed by a Bok win in SA weren't probably the easiest path to the title for NZ. On the other hand, bugger it. Quite enjoying this Wallaby losing streak. Let's see if it can be pushed another week.

I'm picking Oz to take the "longest losing streak in test history" title this year.

I know they won't let me down!

They'll need more than this year to beat France's 18 losses in a row (achieved 1911-1920).

What's the professional era, top tier, losing streak situation?

Wales 10 (2003)
Pumas 8 (twice 2013, 2014)
Scotland 7 (twice 1998, 2011-12)
Ireland 7 (1997-98)
Wallabies 7 (2005)
England 7 (2006)
All Blacks 5 (1998)
Lions 5 (2005-9)*
Springboks 5 (2006)
France 4 (thrice 2013, 2014, 2016)

And if you think Italy should be included in "top tier", their record is 13 (2008-09) which rather proves they shouldn't.

*part of a winless streak of 8 beginning in 2001

Heh. Never been a fan of doing the bragging before the game.

That's a fine example of why it's a bad idea.

[[EDIT: Well done Australia for proving me wrong. Maybe next year, eh fellas?]]
