2016 strikes again

In a year full of twists, Johan Goosen has decided South African rugby could use another one and has just retired at age 24. Racing Metro, stunned by his sudden killing off of his career, are currently in the Denial stage, and will soon be entering Anger, Bargaining, Depression and eventually, Acceptance.

Very strange indeed, retiring at that age. Was it contractual issues, do you think - or something more sinister, perhaps? There are a few rumors floating around out there...

Seems as though legal shenanigans abound, in that he may be trying to exploit some loophole in French contract law so that he can to return to South Africa.

Lots of people just find themselves in a job or career they don't want to be in partway through their life. Whilst pro rugby is a dream for many it may not be for him.

Racing can't stop him retiring, no chance. And they can't stop him moving to another club. But they can hold onto his registration if he is simply looking to move (is this because Carter is at 10?) and avoid paying a transfer fee or settle a breach of contract

Basically in France you have two main contracts.
CDI : Contract with undetermined Duration. (pretty much for life if no incident)
CDD: Contract with Determined Duration. (short term contract). All players are signed up with these for X amount of time/seasons.
The French law allows you to break a CDD if you have been offered a CDI (which are seen as a lot more durable and safe for most positions but are
an absurdity in the sporting world). Gooesent is using the pretext of a Long term South African CDI equivalent to get out of his RM 92 contract.
The reasons behind his decisions are very obscure, but most suspect he just wants to get back to playing in South Africa and prepare for 2019 RWC, taking a year off in the process. His Racing contract was going till 2020. He had an unwritten agreement not play for the Boks whilst playing for Racing. All this is a bit strange because he signed his contract less than a year ago.
It also creates a very strange "precedent"(is this correct in English?) for the Top 14 and the way contracts are signed.

If he goes back to rugby then he is indeed a bit of a scumbag but I'm not jumping to any conclusions. He may not be happy with his career choice.

Precedent is correct Adder my boi. Your English is better than Donald Trump's who recently tweeted "presidented" when attempting to use the same word.

As said before, the Racing is going through a rough patch and the 92 (Hauts-de-Seine) is a shit hole where elephants go to die.

Cheers. Fun side of growing up using two languages, is that you tend to speak both poorly and mix them up
.
"Fun fact" : D. Trump's mother is a MacLeod of Lewis, as is my Gradma. I refer to him as Uncle Don.

Careful, he might rope you in as a guarantor on his next bankruptcy filing

Well we had a quick glance at the family tree, and he doesn't seem to be anywhere close. However, Hebridean families were massive though, 7(including my granny), 11 (great) ,9(great great), 8(great great great) children. Talk about a ripped out fireplace...

In "Racing might have a legitimate point here" news, Goosen has been linked with Gloucester. His contract came with a €1million forfeit clause - i.e., any team looking to buy out his contract to sign him before his contract with Racing is must contend with a €1million price tag - and Montpellier, who was quite keen on the guy to complete their set of ex-Springboks, were reticent to pay the fee. In further shenanigans, Mohed Altrad, who owns Montpellier (the club, not the city, obviously), is trying to buy out a controlling majority of Gloucester Rugby, and if his move is successful, he just needs to have Goosen sit out an 18-month period outside of any league controlled by the LNR (any retired player has to sit out 18 months before they can return from retirement in French club rugby).
Jacky Lorenzetti, who owns Racing, has also had a few choice words for Goosen, claiming that Goosen frequently "faked" injuries and has refused to train since he returned to club duty at the end of November.

You may well be related to my wife then, who is also related to the MacLeods of Stornoway (and thus also related to DT). Small world eh no?

You are linked to the whole Islands once you have a Hebridean connection.
