Trivia

Post by rowan »

Try and answer these, or contribute your own - or both

Name an All Black with Negro ancestry
Name an All Black with Arab ancestry
Name an All Black with Armenian ancestry
Name a 7s All Black with Asian ancestry
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

I'll start releasing clues soon, but the last two should be fairly easy. As for the first, I know of two examples. There may wel have been more than one player of Arab ancestry, as well, but only one than I'm personally aware of.

Ok, clue time :P

Negro ancestry: Of the 2 I'm aware of one was a 'Trench Black' in WWI, the other played for the 'Kiwis' army XV in WWII.

Arab & Armenian ancestry: both switched to league.

Asian ancestry: Actually Fijian-Indian.

Couple more interesting details about the two players with Negro ancestry. The 'Trench Black' once led the haka, and later became an All Blacks selector. The WWII 'Kiwi' played only one test (a loss), and also represented NZ Maori, despite having no Maori ancestry!

There, practically giving it away now

Both were fullbacks. Giving it away!

I suspect you guys are toying with me now  So here are the final clues:

Negro ancestry: In both cases there was a North American connection. The 'Trench Black' played alongside his two brothers for Wellington.

Arab ancestry: Lebanese father, Irish mother. As with the above pair, played his rugby in the lower North Island.

Asian ancestry: Fijian-Indian and also part-Polynesian. A real mix so no prizes for guessing he's from Auckland (& still active, so far as I know). Plays for the same club as the Armenian fullback who converted to league did.

Here's another: How did English club Saracens get their name? :?: Clue: Nothing to do with Arab sponsorshp deals, though I'm sure they wish it was

Nothing to do with the original Saracens either, who didn't quite get as far as England, and the modern variety of rugby hadn't been invented back then anyway...

Of course, the name was inspired by the original Saracens, just not directly linked to them. So ask yourselves, why would an English club name itself after Arab Muslims of the Middle Ages?

Incidentally, the term Saracens was applied to the Arabs by Europeans and is something of a misnomer in its original meaning - 'Followers of Sarah,' free wife of Abraham.
