Predictable that he'd get injured again relatively soon after coming back, yes. But it was apparently the first tackle of the first minute of his first game back...that's just a bad joke. Completely innocuous tackle too. Poor bloke.

It's not outrageous or uncommon that he could suffer some fairly minor soft tissue injuries given he's not played consistently for years. I suppose.

Guardian reporting - "Manu Tuilagi’s prospects of an England comeback this autumn have suffered another blow after it emerged he is set to undergo knee surgery this week. It is understood the Leicester centre tore knee ligaments in the defeat by Bath on Sunday and needs a minor operation that will sideline him for at least the next month".

Poor guy cannot get a break it seems.

Hopes that the Leicester player, who was member of the Lions’s successful tour of Australia in 2013, will ever return to the game-breaking form that was a stand-out feature of England’s defeat of New Zealand in 2012 were given some perspective on Thursday by Ian McDermott, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who specialising in knees and sports injuries.

Asked if it was realistic that Tuilagi could return to top of his game without further injury problems, McDermott told Telegraph Sport: “Not a chance." “He’s such a fantastic player but he’s been plagued by injuries, and with the forces that he’s putting through his joints and the number of operations that he’s had it’s inevitable that his knee will never be 100 per cent normal again, and eventually all this abuse is simply going to catch him up.”

The fact that Tuilagi has now picked up an injury in both knees is likely to cause further complications according to McDermott.

“Repeated injuries combined with determinedly returning to play and pounding your knees simply builds up a massive list of problems for the long-term future, with a much higher risk of premature knee arthritis and early knee replacement surgery,” he added.

He's fucked isn't he? Such a shame.

The whole situation is just sad honestly. It was so exciting watching him play when he was on top of his game. It really seems like this is a pretty significant point in his career.

I'd be worried for his mental health. All the expectation and frustration.

It's nothing a move to Toulon won't cure.

Nothing there to say he won't make a near full recovery and be able to play until his early thirties. Even if that does seem increasingly less likely. However, it sounds like old age will be a painful time for him.

Very sensationalist article though, isn't it? He's had an ACL reconstruction on one knee, a very serious injury but something that is eminently fixable nowadays. By all accounts he's worked hard and rehabbed well...JD2, for example, had an ACL reconstruction in 2015 and was Lions player of the series in 2017. Loads of players, across all sorts of sports make full recoveries from that type of injury.

And now he's having a cartilage trim/repair on the other knee...a fairly minor injury in the grand scheme of things.

Like everyone else I have very little faith that Manu is going to come back and stay fit for a prolonged period of time...but that's totally related to his seemingly innate fragility, rather than the fact that his knees are totally buggered.

Whilst i'm sure it's true, surely that isn't something you can just say outright without having first studied his actual knee?

i mean looking into him i don't think he even does pro sportsman.

agreed, should be knowing the pathology before pronouncing

The number of players having early knee replacements was a little alarming going back a few years, I shouldn't think that's changed much, and whatever the case Manu will not be alone with the likely chance of needing a new knee. In the main it's not like the players don't know these are some of the risks.
