Power try trial

Seven points could be awarded for a “power try” for the first time on Friday after World Rugby gave approval for the experiment in a game in Australia between Western Force and Fiji.

A series of new laws will be trialled to speed up the game. The seven-point try will be awarded to a team who score with an attack started from behind their 22-metre line. As with normal tries, it can also be converted for two more points.

There will be coloured lights on the goal posts at the game in Perth to indicate when a power try is on. As a team attack from within their 22, green lights will run down the posts. When the power try has been scored, the lights will flash. When the chance of a power try is over, by an infringement or a turnover, the lights will turn red.

Other new laws will include lineouts being taken as quickly as a team wish, even if the other team are not ready. There will be a one-minute limit placed on scrums and teams will be permitted to make 12 substitutions in a game.

Taking a l/o quickly and speeding up the scrum arent bad ideas, but a power try with flashing goal posts!!!!!

Ridiculous idea. You could see a 70 phase try made up of pick and goes getting awarded that.

Those all sound fucking terrible. Why do this? Who is wasting money on all this?

I hated it from the minute I saw the thread title and the description has left me no better inclined. This is for that Indo-Pacific competition that the millionnaire who owns Western Force is setting up, so I don't imagine it'll take off, but it's a stupid idea anyway. I get trying to jazz up the game for new markets, but I can't see any benefit to this except to the people who make light-up goal posts.

Jeez, not even the Yanks are doing something this stupid and they've got mid-half water-breaks so they can squeeze in another commercial.

Read it in the times this morning. As soon as the flashing lights were mentioned I stopped taking it seriously. Quite like the idea of quick line outs, though.

How much time is ever wasted in a game waiting for a lineout to form?

My proposal: High score multiball

If the scores are drawn after 75 mins. An extra ball is introduced every minute until some one scores some points.

5.33.245mins on average.

I'd like to see the total time spent on each place kick reduced. If I have to watch Farrell tilting his head from side to side for 30 seconds once more my TV will be at risk.

I sometimes dream of dictating that the last player to have possession of the ball must take the penalty/conversion.

That would be worth it for comedy value alone. It’s also a far better proposal than flashing lights on the posts.

The worst suggestion of the lot is somewhat hidden in the last sentence, though!

12 subs!?! No you bloody well don't.

12 subs is ludicrous.

I thought that was the worst part too, even if some of the rest was bad that really stood out.

I do sort of agree lineouts take too long, but tbh I think the only 'change' we need is the refs flipping who has the throw if attack walks slowly into the lineout. Use it or lose it

Quite. What if the attacking side can't see the posts? Better to have an air raid siren start going the moment the side runs the ball from out of their 22 until it is no longer considered unbroken possession.

I have to admit, I don't hate this idea as much as everyone else. Its silly and pointless, but would be fun, and at least its got its heart in the right place. Change the reward-risk ratio and you get more attacking rugby.

Which incidentally my proposal does in a sneaky way by making getting pinged for 3 points when you eff up running out of your own half that bit less likely. Also, as you say, added comedy.

But mainly I suggest it because I think the importance of the goal kicker runs completely anathema to rugby's status as a team game. And if its going to be silly season, I see no reason not to indulge too!

That's what they do in league, right?
