SA kick off long, England have Daly where you might have the #8 and he catches and sets off toward the edge of the 22. Daly is taken down NFL style, Sinckler at least would admire the lack of the use of the arms. Shields takes a 1 out ball up, and then Faf runs around to give England an easy chance to clear, stupid from Faf.
Farrell ignores the mark and sends England up almost to the SA 10m line
England win the lineout, Slade and Farell try to run the lines of some centres but neither is worrying the SA defence, Farrell easily caught and tackled

Minute 2
Ford drops back and sends a high kick down toward the SA 22, Faf just gets to the ball and flings it infield before carrying into touch
Green 11 runs sideways and is tackled by Sinckler centrefield is, SA don't run a series of plays to take them back left, instead they pass back to Pollard who is left making a clearance from under his posts. It's no a bad kick, maybe going 5m outside the SA 22, but it's also a horrible play that isn't too bad only because he kick's at altitude.
George sends the lineout in toward Itoje, and Itoje makes his 2nd catch. A shit throw from George as Itoje claims it around his waist and we win the ball as SA haven't put anyone up
England move the ball out and Billy is crashing it up running back against the drift. England work the shortside with George, and then go open to Mako, not a lot happening

Minute 3
With not a lot happening Ford launches a high cross kick, and under pressure from May WLR knocks the ball on. I assume May the knocks the ball on himself into Green 11 as England have the ball and play is brought to a stop. Scrum White on the right side of the field well into the SA 22

Good job I’ve opened a nice bottle of Rioja. I’ll come back to this once the wine has suitable numbed me for what will be revealed by this thread.

Are we all looking at this video?
Because it doesn't work for chunks early in the 2nd half, fine for rewatching casually, if annoying, but completely wrecks any chance to do analysis accurately.

This I did not know, but the minute by minute analysis rarely works by then anyway

Minute 4
England win a messy scrum, Billy sends a bad offload back to Youngs, Farrell and Slade are running hard lines that don't interest the SA defence, perhaps they would have been options with a better offload from Billy but now they're just ahead of the ball for no particular reason
England move the ball open and Green 12 breaks on the ball by Youngs and is away, Farrell and May chase back, Faz makes a tap tackle, Green 12 is up again not having been held and Brown arrives to make a 2nd tackle on him and then contests a ball from a big linebreak without much of an evident release. SA ball is slowed and England can effect a turnover and now Billy is away, it's good play from Brown as he wasn't pinged and maybe he had to push it, but he did push that, I'd want a yellow card for that tbh.
Billy runs a few yards and throws another shit offload which Brown knocks on.
England make 3 bad handling errors in the space of 1 minute to be under pressure from this scrum, that's a rate of handling errors even Argentina didn't manage against Wales last night. Billy twice and Youngs once, not good enough from either.

Minute 5
SA move right from the scrum, Faf to Pollard, and both Curry and Billy break that way off the scrum. Pollard then throws a big pass back the other way, Youngs hasn't dropped/stayed in the line on the put in side of the scrum he's pushed 2/3rds of the way up on the 1st receiver that side which creates a 3 on 2 overlap for SA.
Frankly it's rank bad play from SA as Shields was starting to push around to help Curry and Billy so with Youngs in no man's land there's a giant hold on the right hand side of our defence and SA just allow their attack to drift to the touchline, and this must be a called move that's in part designed to expose the space they then so happily ignore.
Green 13 kicks the ball in behind, Brown is sweeping across and gathers, meaning Brown is defending as the 15 from that scrum

Minute 6
England move the ball open, either to try and find Daly for a left footed clearance, or they think they can expose SA just passing down the line, which based on last week isn't a point without merit.
Sadly Farrell is left with having to make a pass off his stronger right hand and promptly shits the bed. Fuck says Farrell, we can all agree. Another rank bad handling error from England, and this basic skill error gives SA a scrum right under our posts. Farrell also says 'no way'' whether he's delusional and thinks the ref has made a mistake or can't believe the team trusted him to execute a basic skill off his dominant hand under little actual pressure isn't clear

The whole Daly/Brown mix and match was a decent, if obvious idea, but you really need time to bed it in, plus need to think carefully in attack which part of the play suits the players skill sets.

England win a scrum penalty, which from there is real get out of jail free card

Everything suits Daly better

Why change the shirt numbers in the first place? Just do it a bit at a time.

Bar maybe being the last line, but a fair point.

Minute 8
Itoje wins another lineout, the throw is higher from George but it's a solid 20 and not double top. England with the ball 5m short of their own 10m line
England try to set a maul, but get their body positions so wrong are held by 3 Saffa forwards, Youngs box kicks down into the SA half, it's a crap kick that's not contestable and lands way too far infield. Green 14 catches and steps Curry but not Brown. Faf moves the ball open/left

well because first time round, Brown and Daly did actually play as their shirt numbers said; this was a bit of a feint yesterday. Feintly daft.

I'm open minded on that, though maybe not to the point that last line defence is part of the attack skill set. And actually I've been a bit harsh on Brown as Brown has better leg drive carrying into contact on attack

Minute 9
SA go all the way out to the touchline, Slade gets something on Green 11 and then May gets him down, it's possible May could have been pinged for a high tackle.
SA come back right and Green 5 makes a positive run slightly winning contact into Launchbury, for a likely 2nd/3rd choice lock it's impressive stuff. Faf makes a clearing box kick and shows why Youngs sent his kick so far infield as Faf does the opposite and sends a kick out on the full. Not the first error from Faf, and against a decent team making daft errors every few minutes will see him exposed and dropped

ah, by everything,I assumed you meant 'everything' and had expanded the debate. Brown is harder to put down.

Minute 10
Shields wins a lineout ball under some pressure and the ball down to Youngs bounces, Youngs is very quick to gather, spin and get the ball away (though the bounce could have been far less kind to England/Youngs and was in truth another bad handling error from England)
Ford drops off a short pass to Slade who has nowhere to go, Slade, Mako and Shields mange to recyle and Youngs can get the ball away. Green 6 just manages to slow the clearance from Youngs, Green 6 is close to doing enough for a pen, but just holds back enough.
Billy takes the ball with the defence up and little space, he makes a dominant carry anyway 'cause he's Billy. As Youngs goes to play the ball Green 6 accidentally causes another delay to Youngs as he's running back onside, again it's not much, again it's there.
However Billy's run has sucked in defenders on the right of the Saffa defence and nobody is working across to cover that. With Daly running a line to hold the defence it's all too easy for Ford and Farrell to send May clear and May draws the last man before putting Brown in for an easy finish.
Brown is able to dot down almost 15m infield, having noted a couple of plays above where SA accidentally (I'm sure) delayed our ball it's worth noting it's so easy for Brown to come infield as Green 13 who's corner flagging has his ankle tapped by Farrell who's lying flat on the ground having made the pass to May. For sure Green 13 wasn't about to stop the score, but it's hardly the first time Farrell has made such a play

Minute 12
England claim the restart, My carries to centrefield. As with SA we find England don't play back to a flank and also give the ball to their 10 under the posts, is it a thing now that 10s want the ball there?, it' even odd when we so often see sides run 2-3 phases when already near a touchline
Ford puts up a high kick, Green 14 runs a blatant block on Brown and at least Brown makes that clear. Farrell kicks up 5m past the SA 10m line on the left.
George floats the ball into the lineout

Minute 13
Itoje wins a contested lineout, Youngs spins the ball wide.
Ford, Farrell and Slade run across he field with Brown off his wing on Ford's shoulder, Ford passes to Faz and wraps around Faz and Slade and collects a return ball. Our midfield trio have help the Saffa front three in defence, and Brown is the extra man who Ford is just about to find, Brown can't quite gather but the juggled ball sucks in Green 11 (not good from Green 11 really) and Daly draws the last man in the line and sends May clear. Green 6 and Green 11 can't get close to May tracking back, Green 14 is covering across but May slows and beats him on the inside before going over for the score, maybe Green 14 could have used the touchline more but he's really moving across at pace and May is also moving at pace so that's a really tough tackle to line up.
We've seen this from England before, we can be very good off 1st phase, it's phases 2 and above which confuse the crap out of us.
