In order to progress beyond a QF this time around we need to figure out how to do two things and fast. (No, I am not underestimating Japan but I do think we know how to defeat them hence glossing over that point...)
1) Beat Ireland
2) Beat South Africa
Failure to top the pool means facing NZ in the QF. Lights out for sure.
Topping the pool means we face SA (likely) and despite their indifferent form over the last few years they are one of the classic power teams that we just struggle to deal with. Game plan progress in the AI fixture will be absolutely essential.

Yeah those are two of the worst teams to face given our weaknesses. This Danny Wilson guy (or whatever his name is) has his work cut out toughening up this pack. Though I think the Edinburgh/Cockerill influence should at least help.
Both opposition teams generally pretty susceptible to conceding out wide, but we really have to be better at giving ourselves the proper platform to attack those areas.

Having Ireland first up is as good as it could be, they tend to start slow in world cups but we really need to beat them well at home in the 6N so they are a wee bit concerned about us,
They know that we rattled them in the last 6N and if our skills had been better the game would have been a hell of a lot closer.

Interesting. Beat us and you'll be grand for topping the group. Lose and then you're going to have to cope with the Japanese in what will likely be their last game in their home tournament with a passionate crowd behind them.

No. Nor Japan. But we've made a habit of beating those two more than SA & Ireland...

I'll dismiss Samoa for them. Scotland would have to have an almighty shocker for them to lose to Samoa.
