Pilfered from Shedweb - some interesting stats here, Neil Back being more prolific than I remembered, no Guscott or Underwoods which probably says something about the modern game. Wade's strike rate is very impressive. Banahan likely to usurp JSD in Glos colours.

The Top 20 Premiership try-scorers
18= Ugo Monye (Harlequins) - 52 tries in 166 matches (31.3%)
18= Iain Balshaw (Bath Rugby, Leeds Tykes, Gloucester) - 52 in 145 (35.9%)
18= Danny Care - 52 in 177 (29.4%)
17. Vereniki Goneva (Leicester Tigers, Newcastle Falcons) - 53 in 101 (52.5%)
14= Tom May (Newcastle Falcons, Northampton Saints, London Welsh) – 54 in 247 (21.9%)
14= Thomas Waldrom (Leicester Tigers, Exeter Chiefs) 54 in 158 (34.2%)
14= Mike Brown (Harlequins) - 54 in 202 (26.7%)
13. Josh Lewsey (Bristol, Wasps) - 56 in 203 (27.6%)
12. Geordan Murphy (Leicester Tigers) – 57 in 205 (27.8%)
11. Ben Cohen (Northampton Saints, Sale Sharks) - 58 in 184 (31.5%)
10. Neil Back (Leicester Tigers) - 59 in 128 (46.1%)
9. Matt Banahan (Bath Rugby) - 62 in 182 (34.1%)
8. James Simpson-Daniel (Gloucester) – 63 in 184 (34.2%)
7. Tom Voyce (Bath, Wasps, Gloucester, London Welsh) - 66 in 220 (30%)

Like Neil Back, he does a lot of falling over once the team has pushed over the line.
Also does a fair bit of taking one step and then falling over, and the occasional 5 step carry

Wade must be the youngest in there by a mile. Will surely streak a long way ahead, particularly if he stays unselectable for England.

1. Tom Varndell (Leicester Tigers, Wasps, Bristol) - 92 in 179 (51.4%)

It'd be great to break this down by position :)

So...

1. Tonga'uiha? 14
2. Trevor Leota 23 (Brits got 21?)
3. Ceri Jones 13 (Amazingly, that's what Planet Rugby says)
4. Simon Shaw 17
5. Dean Schofield 14 (again according to Planet Rugby, has anyone caught this? I have Kruis on 11.)
6. Pat Sanderson 28
7. Neil Back 59
8. Thomas Waldrom 54
9. Danny Care 52
10. Charlie Hodgson 40
11. Tom Varndell 92
12. Tom May 54
13. James Simpson-Daniel 63 (hey, we've gotta shoehorn Sinbad in here somewhere :))
14. Mark Cueto 90
15. Geordan Murphy 57

Some of these will change very soon, I think and some of them will be long-term records. I don't think anyone will shift Back, while Waldrom's total is going to be really hard to challenge. But Brown is closing on Murphy, Wade will take over on a wing, while the 10 will go sooner or later. Mako is on 12, so is close to Tonga, George will surely take over (he's on 20)...

I’d back Simmonds to beat Waldrom. Quarter of the way there already.

Decent shot to take the #1 spot this season

Surprised Lewsey is halfway up the list but Jason Robinson does not feature.

He only arrived to union at 26, no? His scoring rate may be good, but he didn't have much time...

Yeah. Good shout. He’s young enough to catch Waldrom in a few seasons if he keeps up his strike rate.

I’m a little surprised at the low number of tries scored by the most prolific props. Mako has 12 Premiership tries according to ESPN so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him become the highest try scorer from prop this season.

Apparently Mikey Haywood has 17 Premiership tries so I wouldn’t rule him out of topping the hooker try scoring in the next few seasons.

Yes on Mako, but maybe not this year. But it'll be Jamie George for hooker. He's on 20, so I imagine he'll get a few.

Oh, but hang on a minute...What about Ashley Johnson? Sure, he's played far more at 6 or 8, but he's got 23 tries... and as we're on Wasps, Jake Cooper-Woolley has 9 tries, he could reach Jones' 13 in a couple of seasons.

I was surprised when I looked it up, he got 33 in 112 according to ESPN, so less than 1 in 3.

Outrageous that Wade isn't even in the squad ...

Wade is clearly out in front on strike rate.

There’s nothing to suggest he won’t maintain that, so there’s a high chance he’ll overhaul Varndell this season. He’s only just turned 27 so injury permitting, he should smash the previous record by some distance over the next couple of years.

At his current rate, another 30 Premiership games would get him 20 tries and over 100 in total. Ashton is the only player close to catching him.

Also very few current players even making the top 20 which underlines how consistently effective he’s been.

Is this 'top flight league' or simply Premiership? The leagues started in 1987 I think but it was ND1 or similar up to 2000 which may be why the likes of Underwood (retired 98?) and Guscott (2000) don't figure?

Pretty sure it includes Guscott and Underwood - neither of which were as prolific as I remembered, there is a full list somewhere and they do both feature. I'll try to dig it out.

Leicester's top try scorer in that period was Neil Back - I think you'll find Underwood was celebrating for his ability to finish what little ball he got, not his overall strike rate!

Rory scored 134 tries in 236 first-team appearances for Leicester Tigers and is England's record try-scorer, with 49 in 85 internationals.

How is that not prolific?

Could also be professional era, so the likes of Guscott and Underwood in their older days

And is also a LOT more than anyone else on that list so plainly not simply top flight rugby unless he scored a stupid amount of tries in the 3 or 4 years between joining Leicester and the leagues coming in.

I remember Steve Hanley becoming the Premiership's top try scorer and Cueto similar, then Cueto's Premiership record being broken by Varndell. In fact it says the top 20 Premiership try scorers at the top of the list. The fact Guscott (and Underwood (Jnr presumably)) may be on it doesn't debunk that if it is just the tries they scored while they were playing in the Premiership.
