Any Watch lovers here?

So I'm working on a launch for a client and they're making luxury watches.

Which got me thinking, what do you like in a watch?

Do any of you guys collect watches?

I have 6 myself, though I only really wear 4 of them (a SEIKO automatic, silver Skagen, gold Rotary with brown leather strap and a cheap black faced Japanese watch with a black leather strap).

I've got a Chairman Mao one and the second hand is him waving.

When I were a lad I found a watch on the school playing fields and fetched it home for my father. He and I used to keep racing pigeons and this old watch sat on the sill of the loft for years. When my father died the watch was in his belongings. I now have it.

Swiss, Roamer, 17-jewels, Anti-magnetic, numbered (6175), gold-plated (Though little of the plate remaining), scratched glass, no strap, still in working order, probably manufactured in the 40s. It is a crappy aul thing and utterly worthless in terms of market - but it is worth more to me than I can ever measure.

There is something about a watch.

Aye. My favourite watch is my Skagen. Worth about £100 new. Was on my father-in-law's wrist the day he died. They're something that can just be passed down wonderfully from generation to generation. I just wish I had a few older ones.

Yep. I love watches, too. I can sit and watch a mechanism work for ages. Having said that, I’m a tight fisted git and see no purpose in having more than one. I’d love to buy myself a beautiful, pre-owned, expensive-ish one - nothing more than £1,000, any more is far too frivolous - but I can’t countenance spending that much on myself when I could spend it on my blood sucking kids. When the feckers move out I’m going to blow a big wodge on a lovely watch and a fast, small car.

To answer your question.....finally. Most adverts for watches these days seem to be about lifestyle and how blingy (is this a word?) the face is. Make it about quality workmanship and a beautiful mechanism and I’m pulling out the credit card.

I love watches. Apart from a wedding ring the only jewellery I would ever wear. I have a Longines and a Glycine both of which need repairing/servicing if I ever get round to it. I have a Mondaine I wear for best, I love the simplicity of it, every day wear is an iWatch which I won in a competition and which has made the Fitbit and TomTom GPS watches redundant. Stacks of old Timexes and Casio’s lying about, mostly covered in paint.

That sounds like the start to an Alan Bennett drama.

My dad is well into watches. He gave me an Heuer a couple of years ago which I use for smart occasions. He recently sent me a Tissot and a Citizen Eco-Drive (lovely looking watch it was too). For daily use, I'm happy with my Garmin Forerunner as it's comfortable, plus I use it for running and cycling too. If I didn't have the Garmin, I probably wouldn't wear a watch though.

Patek Philippe is where it's at, a snip at just over £200K:

You have to wind it yourself for that price.

I’ll take three. One for each wrist and one for WiW so he can buy back his soul.

If it is, can someone make sure its written into the third act that I get shagged by Beyoncé before she starts banging out the kids with Jay-Z?

I did, but sold it for a Garmin.

It's weird as from a teen to my mid-twenties, I wore a watch most days, but then at some point decided against it. Think it was down to comfort and as I was fairly active, I got bored of putting one on and taking it off a few times a day. It was just so time consuming and labour intensive. Plus with the advent of mobile phones, I got used to relying on that for telling the time.

The Garmin is practical for my needs as well as being comfortable.

We're getting closer to launch and I've got a few jitters around some of the aspects. But I have to say the watches are really taking shape. Some of the elements are a lot higher quality than competitors, without being restrictively expensive. If anyone wants to know more, drop me a message and I can send the details. Don't want to promote a link here, that's not really on...

I wish I could afford to add to my watch collection, though. I'd love some watches of a higher quality. I'm hopefully going to get one of these (or more, let's see how the campaign goes), mind.

Just recently bought a sevenfriday watch I intend to keep and pass down to my son - much cheaper in UAE so I had a bit of a bargain, quirky, chunky and a bit different. www.sevenfriday.com I have the Q2/03 'choo choo' (don't ask....)

Always wanted a breitling navitimer, if I ever get filthy rich i'd get one. Bell and Ross do some very handsome watches too.

I have a few old ones I keep and fetch them out when I remember I have them. Can't beat a decent watch - having said that i am very fond of some of the less decent watches, I have a few Fossil and Diesel watches that I still love wearing.

That's a bit different. Not sure I could handle that: telling the time doesn't seem quite so intuitive :D

I honestly find a lot of the big brand watches cluttered. I'm not a huge fan of most of them. Though some of the Patek Philippes are stunning.

yeah takes a bit of getting used to - once you are tuned in though you really only need look at the minute hand!

Its very different from my other watches which is why it appealed.

Panerai is where its at in my book. Not blingy at all, just understatedly stylish. If we have a good year this time out I might bag myself one.

You just made me think of a newsletter I put out. Ronaldo v Messi. You can guess than Ronaldo is sponsored by the blingiest of the bling, Jacob & Co.

Never been a big fan of watches myself,....but I do remember my very posh Grandparents asking my self made Valley boy Dad about the wisdom of investing in a Persian rug.
His advice, to buy one they liked, was greeted with curious gazes.

Value is all relative.
