IRB releases clarification and guidance on ruck laws from July 2020

Post by Puja »

Well this is interesting. Not sure if they're doing this now to evade scrutiny or to get extra scrutiny because there's no other sport going on. Good opportunity, I guess, as they're definitely not in the middle of anyone's season and everyone's got a chance to restart with these "guidances" in place.

Of course, the proof will be in how well (or how long) these are enforced, but I especially like that they're reasserting that you are tackled when brought to ground with one knee on the floor, not allowed to spring back to your feet if the tackler hasn't held on for the full 48 hour cooling off period. That's been a pet peeve of mine for a long while.

Yeah, you would've thought this would be an ideal opportunity to enforce that one, wouldn't you?

It does seem conspicuous by its absence, possibly down to absinthe

"Encourage arriving players to drive and bind to opponents rather than diving in or tackling them"

From the guidelines

That's good to see, although I would have preferred it to be in the main press release and a bit stronger than "encourage".

Ah nice, though I'll believe it when I see it and keep seeing it
